110 YEARS OF KANSAS BASKETBALL THE NEW MILLENNIUM 2000-2008 Kansas enters new era, Bill Self takes the helm 2000-2001: Roy Williams defeated Stank 'Em, the imaginary monkey that sat on his back as many talented Jayhawk teams failed to get past the second round of the tournament. Kansas finished second in the Big 12 and lost to Illinois, coached by Bill Self, in the third round of the NCAA tournament. THE UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN 2001-2002: Finally, another Final Four. Roy Williams brought Kansas back to national semifinals for the first time since 1993. He had Drew Gooden, Nick Collison, Kirk Hinrich and a great freshman class to work with. The Jayhawks went 16-0 in the Big 12, becoming the first team to do it, before losing to Maryland in the Final Four. 55
