Thursday, November 30, 1967 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN 5 Former KU football prospect will return Levi Lee, a former All-State fullback at Topeka High School who started fall practice at KU in 1964, is hopeful of completing his Navy obligation early so that he can re-enroll at KU next fall. Assistant football coach John Cooper said Lee was here for the Missouri game last Saturday and at that time he would enroll at KU and we are "looking forward to having him." Seaman First Class Lee completes a three-year hirch in the Navy in October, but hopes to get out 90 days early. As to Lee's eligibility, Wade Stinson, KU athletic director said Mike Sweatman, senior captain and linebacker of Kansas' football team, has been chosen to play in the East-West Shrine football game at San Francisco. Sweatman will play for the west squad to be coached by Ben Martin of Air Force. The Kansas Citian is the 18th Kansas player selected to participate in the charity game that benefits hospitals for crippled children. West selects KU captain Lee came to KU on a scholarship in the fall of 1964, but became disgusted with his progress and the way he was being switched from position to position. that it is "premature at this time to determine his status." "I think I'm more mature now," Lee said. He dropped out of KU and enrolled at Texas Western in El Paso. He attended one football practice but no classes there before joining the Navy. He was aboard the U.S. aircraft carrier Forrestal at the time of its tragic explosion this summer. Football banquet features awards The KU gridiron season comes to an official close Friday, Dec. 8, at the annual Football Banquet. Festivals will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Kansas University Ballroom. The banquet, which climaxes every Jayhawk Football season. will be highlighted by the presentation of individual awards and the naming of letter winners by coach Pepper Rodgers. Special awards to be announce are the Ormand Beach Award, which is presented to KU's outstanding player by a vote of the members of the squad; the Mike Getto Award, presented to KU's outstanding lineman as chosen by a vote of the Big Eight Conference coaches; the Don Pierce Award, which honors the Jayhawks' leading tackler, and the Artur Weaver Scholarship Award, presented to the otoustanding senior player with the best academic record.
