5 PAVVAE JOOA OITSTYVAC 14 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN 788.85 and/or 92.90 value Wednesday, November 29, 1967 McCarthy- Continued from page 3 His contention is that the administration has flubbed or ignored opportunities to negotiate or deescalate. He speaks of a need to "develop a sense of change of policy." "I don't say the bombing should be stopped necessarily unless it is part of a somewhat wider withdrawal or ceasefire," he told UPI recently, "You might continue the bombing to cut off supplies but I think they ought to stop bombing close to the heart of Hanoi—this is really psychological bombing now—and maybe begin to evacuate or vacate some of the areas of South Vietnam as kind of a testing to see if some order and some stability might be established. "I see no change of policy on the part of the administration." family not involved Family not involved At times during the taped interview, McCarthy seemed to lose interest in questions. Pressed to describe his family's reaction to all the furor he had created, he answered with some impatience: "Oh, I don't really want to involve my family in this. I'm kind of against this policy or running the whole family for office. I think they are understanding." Does he hope to win? "Well, I don't go that far. I think you have to be realistic and the most one could hope for would be to get an indication of what public sentiment is in the best kind of test by which it can be determined, namely by the identification of an issue of this complexity with a person." Wouldn't he like to be President? "No, I don't particularly want to be president of the United States . . . " McCarthy says he would not accept the nomination of a third party. And as to suggestions that he might advocate running away in Vietnam, his reply is short and sharp: "Oh, nobody's for a straight pullout . . . they say, you want to pull out, you want to cut and run; they give you some of that cattle talk all the time." Although some of his supporters and detractors are surprised and shocked at his decision to play the role of a political hotpur, dissent is not a new proposition for McCarthy. Six years ago, in the first of his books, "Frontiers of American Democracy," he wrote: "It is generally accepted that there are two conditions under which obedience to the government may be withheld. First, in the event that the state has extended its authority into fields of life which do not properly belong to it: if, for example, it usurps the authority of his family, of religion or if it trespasses on areas reserved for individual and personal decision and choice; and second, when the government, acting in its proper sphere, orders actions which are wrong and contrary to right reason, an extreme example of which would be either an unjust war or an unnecessary one." 'Free love' panelist bargains on St. Paul "Is Free Love a Bargain?" was the subject discussed by a panel of three KU professors, and a number of bargain hunters from the student body. "First of all, there is no discussion here," English professor John Senior said. "You're all here to find some rationalization for the sex you have inculdged in." Senior quoted St. Paul from the Bible, and said that no matter what religion you believed in, the only way to survive in the present corrupted world is to pick an expert and stick with him. He cited St. Paul as his model in life Tuesday night in the Kansas Union Forum Room. Lawrence S. Bee, professor of human development and family life, and Eric Wright, professor of psychology, who also served on the panel, answered student questions on veneral disease and abortion. The forum, the first of the "New Freedoms" series presented by the SUA Religion Forum, is entitled "Freedom of Sexual Response?" Three other forums are scheduled in the series. They are "Protest and Civil Disobedience?" Feb. 20; "The Morality of War," March 21; and "Freedom From Want?" May 2.
