Tryouts for Stravinsky's opera, "The Rake's Progress," will be conducted by music director George Lawner at 7 p.m. today and 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Swarthout Recital Hall. Auditions for Shakespeare's "Macbeth," directed by Jack Brooking, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Murphy Hall Rehearsal Room. Two Experimental Theatre productions, "The Crumbling Citadel," directed by Miles Coiner, Edwardsville graduate student, and "Payment as Promised," directed by theater professor Fred Litto, will also have tryouts at 7 p.m. in the Murphy Hall Rehearsal Room. Those auditioning should meet in the Murphy Hall Green Room before tryouts. Two paintings stolen from Strong Two paintings valued at $125 were taken from the wall in the third-floor hallway of Strong Hall sometime between 6 p.m. Nov. 20 and 7 a.m. Nov. 21, according to Peter Thompson, instructor of drawing and painting. KU prof edits new college text James A. Clifton, associate professor of anthropology, is the editor of a new college textbook. The book, "Introduction to Cultural Anthropology: Essays in the Scope and Methods of the Science of Man," is a collection of 18 essays by specialists in the various areas of cultural anthropology. Mrs. Bertha "Kitty" Randall ran "Kitty's Saloon," which was padlocked several weeks ago in a raid led personally by Governor Claude Kirk. Mrs. Randall told UPI none of the gang misbehaved in her bar or warehouse, where they held their meetings. "Most of the guys were well behaved in my place and I served as much coffee and soft drinks as I did booze. A lot of them wore No. 13s on their colors, which means they smoke pot, but they never did it in my place. "But they stole $75 worth of beer and wine from my place after it was closed down," she added. Panel to discuss finance at AAUP meeting today The financing of KU will be explored in a meet-the-press format during an American Association of University Professors (AAUP) meeting, Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Kansas Room of the Union. On the question-answering panel are Max Bickford, executive officer of the Board of Regents; Raymond Nichols, vicechancellor of finance; Keith Nitcher, comptroller; and William Smith, dean of the engineering school. They will be questioned by Ronald Calgaard, associate professor of economics; James Maloney, chemical engineering professor; and Keith Weltmer, professor of business administration. The purpose of the AAUP meeting is purely informational, Milo Stucky, treasurer, said, and not a challenge. Stucky said the meeting is open to the public, but non-members should come at 7:15, after the AAUP dinner. About 300 professors are members of the KU AAUP, Stucky said.
