8 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Tuesday, November 28, 1967 Varsity dumps frosh By Mike Jones Kansan Staff Reporter The KU varsity outlasted a stubborn freshman team for a 84-59 victory Monday night. The varsity was led by veteran JoJo White and newcomer Dave Nash. White scored 20 points and furnished good team leadership while Nash scored 16 points and brought down six rebounds. Dave Robisch, 6-9 center from Springfield. Ill., scored 23 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the freshmen. KU coach Ted Owens expressed both pleasure and disappointment with the varsity's performance. "We played well in spurts," Owens said. "But we have a long way to go. Nash played well at times, but he needs work on his defense and feeding the ball off the post. Dave does move toward the basket well though. We haven't had a post man who can go to the basket like that in several years." Nash is a junior college transfer from Dallas Baptist where he averaged more than 19 points a game. Vernon Vanoy, last year's starting center, saw limited action in the contest and scored three points. Vanoy just reported for practice Sunday after spending the fall as a starting end on the Jayhawk football team. "Vernon looked about as well as you could expect him to look at this stage." Owens said. "He is not anywhere near where he was at the end of last season, but we hope he will be ready in time for the conference season." KU's new freshman coach Gale Catlett said he was pleased with his team's performance against the varsity. "We went home for Thanksgiving vacation, so our endurance wasn't too good," Catlett said. "We were only behind ten points at half time, but when we got tired in the second half, they really poured it on us." Catlett said he was particularly pleased with the play of Robisch. "Robisch is a great competitor," Catlett said. "He keeps his mouth shut and works hard every day. He deserves everything he gets." Catlett indicated he was also happy with the play of 5-11 guard Richard Essington. "Essington has made the transition from high school ball to college very well," Catlett said. "He is small, but he is very quick and has good hands." Greg Douglas, a highly regarded sophomore, saw extensive action but scored only one point. "We weren't a bit disappointed in Greg," Owens said. "He showed very good effort." Owens said that White looked good at times, but he still can improve. "Jo didn't play anywhere near where he is capable of playing." Owens said. The varsity hit a 44 per cent of its field goals while dropping in 67 per cent of its free throws. The freshmen hit 32 per cent of its field goals and 81 per cent of its free throws. The varsity opens its schedule next Saturday against Utah State in Allen Field House. The freshmen will play the varsity reserves in the preliminary game. Coach praises frosh football team Last Monday's 12-7 triumph over Oklahoma closed out a fine 3-1 season for Dick Tomey's freshman football squad. By the season's end, the frosh were down to 20 players, but according to Tomey, this was more of an incentive for the team than it was a drawback: "it meant a few boys had to play both ways, and a lot had to play with injuries. The lack of numbers served as something for pride and unity of the team." Bessides the OU victory, the freshmen also defeated Kansas State 3-0 and Oklahoma State 17-7. Their only loss was to Missouri, 14-7. Tomey listed the following as standouts for the team: John Riggins, Centralia fullback; Don Audry, Pasadena, Calif., quarterback; Steve Lawson, defensive tackle from Chicago; Kevin O'Malley, defensive tackle from Cleveland; Skip James, defensive back from Kansas City; Stan Washington, defensive guard from Harrisburg, Pa.; Mike McCoy, center from Hiwatha; Niles Hauser, Ellenwood; and Larry Brown, defensive end from Starke, Fla. NEW YORK—(UPI)—Southern California's Trojans, dislodged from the No. 1 ranking in their next to last game of the season, bounced back to defeat top ranking UCLA 21-20 and regain top honors. Their position was assured Saturday when second place Tennessee scored an unimpressive 17-7 victory over Kentucky 2-8 and Purdue No. 3 and UCLA No. 4 fell victim to upsets.
