Tuesday, November 28, 1967 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN 5 Pilgrim walks around world to protest By Tim Jones Kansan Staff Reporter Last Tuesday while students were packing and leaving KU for Thanksgiving vacation a silver-haired middle-aged woman, refusing to give her name, calling herself only Peace Pilgrim, walked into town on her personal peace protest. Without a penny in her pocket she has walked 25,000 miles "once around the world," in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Her wordly possessions are carried in the pockets of a blue tunic she wears. Printed on the front of the tunic and on the back are the words, "25,000 miles on foot for world peace." "I shall remain a wanderer until mankind has learned the way of peace, walking until I am given shelter, and fasting until I am given food," she said. War is obsolete She says war is obsolete, but world leaders haven't recognized its obsolescence. "The people are way ahead of their leaders in understanding this," she said, "and in this country either leaders reflect the will of the people or they are changed at the next election." The Peace Pilgrim, who is now on her fourth trip through the country, has walked in 48 states, all ten provinces of Canada and in parts of Mexico. This is her fourth time in Lawrence. The trips, all begun at the head of the Tournament of Roses Parade, New Year's Day in Pasadena, Cal., were started in 1953, 1955, 1958, and 1966. She prepared 15 years before beginning her pilgrimage. "There came a time," she said, "when I found making money easy, but meaningless. I began to live to give instead of get." "I entered a life of giving and fortunately attained good health," she said. THE PEACE PILGRIM No background She declined to give any of her personal background, saying only the future was important and the world has become her family. She also said she doesn't want her education known so she can relate to people on all levels. Uneducated people tend to be wary of the highly educated person, she said, "I want to talk to people on all levels." "Each day is a new experience," she said, "I approach a new town with anticipation because something nice always happens." "The world is like a mirror," Peace said, "smile and it smiles back." "I never approach people, they approach me," she said. "My tunic attracts people to stop and talk to me. "The tunic also selects out superficial people and as a result I meet people truly interested in peace," she said. People approach her The Pilgrim, who maintains a permanent address in Cologne, New Jersey, said she goes where she is invited and is often asked to speak to groups in the towns she visited. While in Lawrence, she spoke at the Lawrence Peace Center. "Ive never asked for food or shelter but I, fortunately, have been supplied by people who honor my pilgrimage," she said. She said she once faced death in a snowstorm in the southwest. "It was a real blizzard and I found a packing box under a bridge and slept there," she said. "My fingers were so cold I could hardly pull the paper in the box around me," she said. "A snowplow awakened me in the morning." Attacked by maniac "I finished my 25,000 miles and have now stopped counting," she said. "On this trip I plan to avoid main highways. I want to walk on country roads, wilderness trails and city streets." "Another time, a maniac attacked and hit me," she said. "He was disturbed, but I faced hatred with love. After the attack he felt remorse and is now quite friendly." The next stop on her trip was Merriam, Kansas.
