Their expressions varied. Some appeared awe struck, while others looked as though they wished the old building didn't have to be destroyed. Some took notes furiously; others stood and laughed at the awkwardness of the whole affair. Threatening skies, filled with dark, heavy clouds, prevailed overhead. A light fog was drifting in from the north. The day was dreary, for KU was losing one of its most celebrated landmarks. The history of the gymnasium is brief. It was built in 1907 at a cost of $500,000, only a fraction of the amount of the proposed $5.8 million Humanities building, scheduled to be built on the site. The new building is expected to have 26 stories, special inter- structure parking area and ultra modern study and classroom facilities.
