CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Hornets gained home court advantage for the first round of the playoffs and denied Pat Riley his 1,000th career coaching victory by beating the Miami Heat, 83-73 last night.
The Hornets, who were in seventh place in the Eastern Conference on March 20, won 14 of their last 16 games, and seven in a row to become the fourth seed. They will play the Philadelphia 76ers in the open-
