The key to the program's growth, Edgar R. Wickberg, co-director of the program, said, was the accumulation of 40,000 volumes of Chinese and Japanese literature since 1959 and the recruitment of six faculty members to teach Oriental languages. Established in 1959 by the Kansas legislature, the program now has a budget of about $100,000.
