The scholarships are the highest academic award an undergraduate KU student who is a graduate of a Kansas high school may receive. Established in 1929 from the estate of the late Solon E. Summerfield, KU alumnus and New York manufacturer, the awards are made on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, character, and promise of future usefulness to society.
