The various departments at KU nominated students and had the best chances and then sent the nominations to the regional committee. Fox said. Twelve regional selection committees personally interviewed the three promising candidates. These sent the credentials of their selections to the national committee which made the final decision. The amount of the grant varied from year to year, depending on the cost of living and the money available. Fox said.
