6 Wednesday, January 27, 1971 University Daily Kansan Six University of Kansas athletes posted straight "A" grades during the first semester and 55 members of various teams scored at least grade averages of "B" or better, according to Charles O'Neal, Top Grades Made by 55 Athletes athletic department counselor, Heading the Jayhawk honor roll with straight "A" grades were Jay Hassan, Nate Abbous, N. Meeal Mask, junior basketball forward from Tulsa, and four members of Will History Repeat In Ames Saturday? On the basis of recent history, you might wonder if the Kansas Jayhawks are looking forward to their meeting Saturday night. The Browns are looking forward to that. roll with grade averages on a 4.0 scale: By DON BAKER Kansan Sports Editor The Armory in Ames has been one of the most disastrous places coach Ted Owens' Hawks have played during recent years as evidenced by overtime losses each of the last two years But a look at recent KU-Iowa State games played in the Armory make one wonder. In each of the last two years KU won handily in Lawrence, 94-61 in 1969 and 82-62 in 1970, before falling in those two overtime games in Amherst—18-72 (in double overtime). But that appears to not be the case as the Jayhawks, showing more and more as each game goes by that they have the maturity, poise and discipline to win the whole shebang, are determined to make the third time the charm. Pierre Russell, after being reminded of the last two nightings in Ames, said emphatically it would not happen again. Perhaps KU has already experienced its scare for this season from the Cyclones. They forced the Hawks into overtime in the Big Eight Tournament before Dave Robich took the matter to hit winnings with six points in the extra five minutes to give On two other occasions it was down to the last second before the Jayhawks pulled it out. Bruce Sloan's free throw with no time showing on the clock gave KU a 68-67 decision in 1968 but won easily later in the season in Lawrence, 91-18 in 1966 it was a similar story. After having won 82-65 in Lawrence, it took a Bob Wilson 20-foot jump at the final buzzer to provide a 49-47 win in In fact, in Owens' six years at the Jayhawk helm, only twice has he come back from Ames with relatively easy wins. In 1965 he scored against the Rams and lost in the playoffs. Football (9)—Mike McCoy, Ilawaha, Engineering, 3.64, David Rola, Affton, Mo. Arts and Sciences, 3.57, Dave Standale But for forgetting that game and considering last Saturday's 83-57 bombing of the Cyclones in Allen Field House, the plot is thickening like it has the past two years. If the story ends on the same way, a major blow will be dealt to KU's title hopes. While the Jayhawks might have trouble playing in Ames, Dave Robich must certainly like the Cyclones for the big 6-10 senior All-American candidate has had his best collegiate series against the lowans. ★★ In fact, he is almost certain to become KU's career score leader for the Iowa State series. In six games he has scored 162 points (for 27 per game average) leaving him only five behind his teammate with 167 points in eight games with Iowa State two decades ago. Swimmers with perfect grades were Kim Bolton and Gary And Robisch is also almost certain to pass Witt Chamberlain on the KU career scoring list and move into second behind Lovellette Robisch's three year total to date is 1,426 points, just under Chamberlain's two year accumulation as a collegian. The other part of the the Jayhawks' 6-8 dynamic duo, Roger Brown, was one of two Big Eight performers to be drafted in the first two rounds of the American Basketball Association's "secret" draft held last Friday. ★★★ the defending Big Eight champion swimming team. The Chicago native was the first pick in the second round and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Colorado's Cliff Meyer who was naked in the first round by Dave Robich and Pierre Russell were neither picked in the first two rounds and the outcome of later rounds was not known. ★★ As the Jayhawks have steadily risen in the national rankings, so as attendance in Allen Field House. In fact, in the last three games at home, KU has drawn 43,000 fans to run its season total of 19,994, an average of 11,994 for nine apperancees in the field house. Monday night's encounter with Kansas State, which will have a 17.000 plus crowd, of course will increase that average. Speaking of crowds and the Kansas Jayhawks, if you want to see how they work with each other in your tickets to the NCAA Midwest Region now and then hope to see a game, you should go to http://www.ncaa.com/college. ★★★ If KU does win it all it will be off to Wichita State 18 and 20 for the regional tournament in Wichita State's 10,500 seat Henry Levitt Arena. That is all good but what is bad is that only 600 seats will be allocated to each participating school. Speculation has it a lottery would be used to determine which lucky persons receive the ducats. Price of ticket is $5 per session or $10 for both nights. Mail orders, however, must add 25 cents to that cost for handling But rather than take a chance on that you can still send in tickets to orders to Wichita State for seats other than the 600 at Ferguson. Mail orders, which will be accepted beginning Feb. 1, should be mailed to: Midwest Regional Tournament, Wichita State Athletic Department, Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas. That may not be so bad because Jayhawks have lost the last two years in the Iowa State Armory. Saturday morning the team will go to the Armory to practice for the finals.
