McDonald played in the U.S. Army All-American bowl following his senior year of high school, and Scout.com ranked him as the eighth-best middle linebacker in his class. He played in all 12 games of the 2009 season, and he played 11 games in 2010, but McDonald appeared in only four games in 2011 because of injuries.
