From the opening of the University in 1866 through 1964, Chapel exercises were the first event of each school day. Currently, the opening convocation, held on the first day of classes, each fall follows what across the years has become a standardized pattern of traditional hymns and responsive readings, with greetings to the students and faculty from state and university officials. The exercises will start at 9:30 and morning classes will follow this schedule: 8 classes will meet, 8-8;35; 9 classes will meet, 8:45-9:29; Convocation, 9:30-10:20; 10 classes will meet, 10:30-11:05; 11 classes will meet, 11:15-11:50.
