Meredith. No one was hurt and there were no arrests in the demonstration which began at the University cafeteria while Meredith was eating dinner and later spread to the Negro's dormitory where it continued well into the night. It was the worst demonstration on the campus since the bloody rioting, touched off by Meredith's admission that killed two persons and injured several hundred others. THERE WAS NO APPARENT attempt to harm Meredith. He emerged during the melee in front of the cafeteria and went virtually unnoticed back to his dormitory, Baxter Hall. The later demonstration outside Baxter Hall occurred at the opposite end of the dormitory from Meredith's apartment. Several soldiers and U.S. marshals chased a few of the students who hurled eggs, bottles and firecrackers at a Jeep-load of soldiers outside the cafeteria. They were unable to catch the youths, however, and the crowd of about 200 students broke up after campus police chief Burns Tatum jokingly told them to "let them (the soldiers) go on now. I've run that Jeep off." But students later began harassing soldiers standing guard outside Baxter Hall by tossing firecrackers and loud-popping cherry bombs down from dormitory windows. A group of several hundred students gathered in front of a dormitory across the street from Baxter Hall. DEAN OF STUDENTS L. L. Love was talking with students inside Baxter while the disturbance went on outside. There have been reports of consistent harassment of Meredith, such as slamming doors, shouting and fireworks, by students in Baxter. Students sources quoted Love as saying he had advised against housing Meredith on the campus but that he had been overruled by Justice Department officials. Love later walked over and urged the students to return to their dormitories and the group began dispersing. The soldiers apparently had orders not to go into the dormitory from where the fireworks were being thrown. But a platoon of military policemen stood by in a clump of woods near Baxter Hall to reinforce the Meredith guard in the event the demonstrators got out of hand. One soldier said he saw a "Molotov Cocktail," a soft drink bottle filled with gasoline and cotton, thrown from the building. ANOTHER SOLDIER DETAINED one youth who called him a "Nigger loving ---," but let him go after a lecture. "I'm just doing my duty," the soldier said. "It must take a lot of courage on your part to insult a man wearing the uniform of your country." There was no immediate indication whether last night's action was connected with the "Rebel Underground," a secret group dedicated to fight Meredith's presence "with every means available." The group stated in handbills circulated several hours after a crowd of 100 students jeered Meredith outside the student union dining room last Wednesday that it had just begun to fight . . . brotherhood by bayonet. University Chancellor John D. Williams appealed to students at a YMCA-YWCA meeting last night not to create any disturbances at the University. Some 40 students attending the meeting stood up and applauded when Williams ended his talk. Fugitive Doctor Charged with Abortion Death to Be Extradited to New York MONTPELLIER, France — (UPI) — Fugitive Dr. Harvey Lothringer, under undictment in New York in connection with the abortion death of a 19-year-old coed, will be returned to the United States as soon as authorities in Paris approve a Montpellier extradition order, it was learned today. The Montpellier Chamber of Accusations ordered Lothringer's extradition after turning down protests by Lothringer's attorney who claimed his client's arrest Sept. 13, allegedly in the hideaway principality of Andorra in the Pyrenees, was illegal. A Queens County Grand Jury in New York indicted Lothringer Sept. 26 for first degree manslaughter and abortion in the death of Barbara Lofrumento, 19, of Pelham, N.Y., a student at New Rochelle, N.Y., College. Queens Assistant District Attorney Philip Chetta said he obtained a confession from Lothringer in France last month that Miss Lofrumento died on his operating table June 3 after an illegal abortion arranged by her parents. Lothringer disappeared from his New York residence-office June 4, taking his receptionist, Theresa Carillo, 24, with him.
