Page 10 University Daily Kansan Monday. Oct. 29.1962 Lean, Hungry Jayhawks' Comeback in Last Half By Steve Clark "Yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look . . . such men are dangerous"—Brutus. Patterning themselves after William Shakespeare's characterization in the tragedy Julius Caesar, the Kansas Jayhawkers, trailing by 10 points, returned to Oklahoma State's Lewis Field following halftime intermission with a lean and hungry look. SATURDAY'S first half had been disastrous for the Jayhawkers, a two touchdown pre-game favorite. The OSU Cowboys took the opening kickoff, marched 62 yards in six plays and scored with only three minutes elapsed on the clock. $ ^{\textcircled{8}} $ The Jayhawkers were stopped on two series of downs before the Cowboys stunned the Kansans once more when Mike Miller completed a screen pass to Marcus Hendricks for 63 vards and a touchdown. Statistically the Jayhawkers were also outplayed. The Cowboys held a 270 to 175 total offense edge on the visitors. Nine completions of 19 pass attempts accounted for 213 yards for the Cowboys. The bulk of the Jayhawkers yardage, 163, had been accrued on the ground. A HALFTIME STRATEGEM by KU Coach Jack Mitchell was responsible for the Jayhawker's lean and hungry look. Mitchell gave no inspirational halftime talk. He let the players do it themselves. "It's your football team as well as ours," he said. "There's nothing we can do. You want it as bad or worse than we do. If you want it, go get it I'm getting out of here." He and the other coaches left. WHAT HAPPENED in the Jayhawker dressing room remains a mystery. Mitchell said he heard yelling and scuffing. Several lockers were knocked over. He thought he heard quarterback Rodger McFarland give a speech. "The boys needed a shock treatment and they gave it to themselves,' the KU coach said. The Jayhawkers then managed to unveil what Mitchell calls "the greatest comeback victory" he has ever seen. "I COULD LIVE to be 100 years old and coach 1,000 football teams, but there would never be a victory that would match that one." The Jayhawkers went ahead 22-17 on Baughman's two-yard touchdown plunge with 43 seconds remaining in the third period. The drive covered 50 yards in nine plays. Cast as Cowboy conspirators, the Jayhawkers took the kickoff and marched 80 yards in 12 plays and scored in four minutes and fifteen seconds. The Jayhawkers went for two on the point after touchdown attempt and McFarland passed to Pack St. Clair, alone in the end zone, narrowing OSU's margin to 17-15. TWO MORE TOUCHDOWNS were added in the fourth quarter padding the Jayhawker lead and giving them a 36-17 victory, their third in conference play compared to one defeat. The Jayhawkner that was the most lean and hungry was halfback Gale Savers. The fleet-footed Omaha, Neb., sophomore set a new conference one-game rushing record as he carried 21 times for 283 yards breaking Iowa State's Dave Hoppmann's record of 270, set against Kansas State last year. Reeves Peter, the Big Eight's executive director, has authorized the new record, and the mark was approved yesterday by Homer Cooke Jr., head of the NCAA statistical body. THE COMPLICATIONS arose from a scuffle involving Sayers and OSU's Don Derrick. Derrick forced Sayers out of bounds and then tackled him. Sayers' temper flared and he sent a right to Derrick's rib cage. Both teams scuffled for about a Have You Visited the "COBWEB" at the BOOK NOOK 1021 Mass. half-minute before the officials and coaches broke up the melee. Mitchell removed Sayers from the game, despite the fact he received no official notification that the star halfback had been ejected. "I wasn't going to play him any more and take the chance of him getting hurt," Mitchell said. "Several of the boys came up and said that they had heard over the radio that Gale was close to a record and asked me to put him back in. "WELL, I WASN't going to, but the boys wanted me to because they like him and wanted him to have a chance at the record. Well, Gale's a fine boy and I thought it would be a nice thing for him to have so I put him back in." Sayers carried the ball for 15 yards and a new conference individual record. The officials, however, classified him as an illegal player and penalized the Jayhawkers 15-yards because of a dead ball foul. "The official never told me Gale was out of the game. How am I to know that, if he doesn't tell me? I am not a mind reader." Mitchell protested. IN A DEAD BALL foul situation, the yardage gained must be credited to the team's offensive total. In order to do this, an individual also must receive credit. After discussion, Peters and Cooke gave approval for a record. Savers most sensational contribution of the afternoon, however, was a 96-yard run in the fourth quarter. With the Jayhawkers in a first and ten situation on their own four following a punt, Sayers carried around his left end, evaded at one time or another the entire Cowboy eleven, pulled away from a final OSU player who grabbed for his shirt tail, and ran unmoleted from the 50 yard line to score. THE RUN took the Jayhawkers out of a bad position and sewed up the game as KU lead 29-17. Following the game, the Jayhawk- player players agreed that they were not prepared mentally for the Cowboys in the first half. However, a KU assistant coach, Don Fambrough, summarized the Jayhawker's comeback victory best. "This ought to be the greatest lesson in the world for these players. Now they'll believe what we try to tell them all week." Shows At 7:00 & 9:00 OSU's Defense Faltered in Loss Oklahoma State Coach Cliff Speegle talked to his players for several minutes behind closed doors following their heartbreaking loss to the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday. The Cowboy mentor said his team did not get tired. "We just got knocked down and run over. Their fullbacks (Armand Baughman and Ken Coleman) hurt us up the middle and that gave Kansas a good chance to get Sayers (Gale) outside." "Our kids gave out 100 per cent all the way and a couple of catches might have made a big difference for them." He then opened the doors and retired to a corner of the equipment room to remove his sweaty clothes. SPEEGLE ATTRIBUTED his Cowboy's defeat to the inability of the OSU green team (the defensive unit) in holding the Jayhawkers offensively in the second half. "I GUESS WELL have to play a 10-man line to stop anyone," he said almost seriously. "We had to stop them on at least three series of downs in both halves to win," he said, "and we didn't do it in the second half." The Cowboys used a "gap-8" defense against the Jayhawkers throughout the game. Speeagle refused to draw comparison between Kansas and Missouri, but did say that he thought the KU offense was as effective as Missouri's. He said he could not tell which of the two teams were tougher defensively. TENNISSEE WILLiams Technicolor PANVISION 1980- "DON WAS WIDE-OPEN and had a clear field." Speegle said. "If he had gotten that touchdown we'd have been ahead 23 or 24 to 22 and Kansas would have had to drive all the way with the kickoff to regain the lead. A lot of things can happen on a long drive and not all of them are good. Come Out Early! Show Starts At 7:00 Adults 85c The Cowboys suffered a tough break in the fourth quarter when end Don Brewington dropped a pass from quarterback Mike Miller on the KU 30. At that time Kansas lead 21-17. The OSU mentor praised the running of KU's Savers. "He's cute on his feet and has great speed. We didn't exactly set the world on fire with our tackling and let him get around on the corner on us." "Bad news for you," Bill Easton, KU track and cross country coach, told a reporter last week. Coach Easton went on to explain that Charlie Hayward, cross country team captain, was slowly recuperating from the flu. By Roy Miller Hayward's progress must have taken a turn for the better — at sonic speed, too. The Lenexa senior placed second in KU's dual meet against Oklahoma here Friday afternoon.
