Page 8 University Daily Kansan Monday, Oct. 29, 1962 IAWS Purpose and History Explained at AWS State Day The history and purposes of the Intercollegiate Association of Women Students (IAWS) were explained Saturday during AWS State Day here. Miss Jerilyn Williamson, Baton Rouge, La., graduate student and graduate assistant at Corbin Hall spoke. Miss Williamson is the coordinator for IAWS for Region III, composed of 38 schools in 15 states. "WOMEN'S governing groups originally began on women's campuses and then spread to co-educational colleges," she began. "The Midwest Collegiate Association of Women's Student Governing Groups held its first convention at the University of Wisconsin in 1913. This was the parent organization of AWS." The member schools met at Ohio State next year and adopted a constitution. "The first national convention was held in 1923. Now they are held every other year," Miss Williamson explained. "In the intervening years, four regional conventions are held." Miss Williamson listed four points basic to the program of IAWS: - The strengthening and improvement of all women's governing groups, both member and nonmember. This is accomplished by personal contacts, publications and correspondence. - The formation of women's governing groups where none exist. - The increasing awareness of member schools to the problem connected with the education of American women today. - The development of the role of college-trained women in the community of the future. Last year's region III convention was held at KU. This year's meeting will be March 24-28 at the University of Oklahoma. VI 2-0247 ALL OUR PROBLEMS ARE NOT THIS SIMPLE We say "our" advisedly. YOU have to decide which companies to see about your future job. At a time when you've already got more to do than you can reasonably handle, it would be helpful if making that job choice could be done for you by slide rule — or computer. If it's any consolation, WE are facing much the same problem — from the opposite side of the fence. We've got to make decisions about a lot of young Engineers like you—also without benefit of slide rule or computer. We must decide who would be of help to us in tackling assignments in today's technologies of the aerospace and electronics industries. You DO have one advantage we haven't you probably know something about General Dynamics already. We'd like to even the score a bit by finding out more about you. A discussion might solve both our problems. Our Representative will be on your campus shortly with information about positions in each of these divisions: in CALIFORNIA — Convair and Astronautics Divisions in San Diego; Pomona Division in Pomona in NEW YORK — Electronics and Telecommunication Divisions in Rochester In TEXAS — Fort Worth Division in Fort Worth Incidentally, our man will have the solution to the puzzle along, just in case you missed it. Why not make a date to see us at your Placement Office now? INTERVIEWS AT KANSAS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31 This invitation is also open to candidates for advanced degrees in Engineering, Physics and Mathematics. If you should miss us, you can get information on careers at any of General Dynamics Divisions by writing to Tracy Brooks.. GENERAL DYNAMICS 1 Rockefeller Plaza, New York 20, New York.
