Fox NEW YORK — (UPI)—The Negro and Puerto Rican kids swarmed on the black convertible until its tires flattened, its springs collapsed and the automobile just gave up. From the maelstrom of squealing youngsters rose a grinning man in a straw sombrero. He jumped out of the car and began shaking hands right and left while New York police, in genuine alarm, tried to part the surging crowd. THE MAN WAS the governor of New York. Nelson A. Rockefeller. Rockefeller is campaigning for reelection and the tempo at which he is going about it would suggest that he is in a death struggle for his job. Actually, he is the over-riding favorite against a politically inexperienced Democratic candidate, Robert M. Mortentau. Yet by the Nov. 6 election, Rockefeller will have stumped at least once in every one of the state's 62 counties. And he is going after New York City as if in hopes of reversing a situation which has not seen Apple Eaters Foil Dentists LONDON — (UPI) — An apple a day may also keep the dentist away. WHAT HE IS UP TO is obviously a showing in this election so impressive that he will go into the 1964 GOP presidential convention in an invincible position. One sunny day last week, with Manhattan at its October best, Rockefeller set out on the city streets. It was a performance of energy and personal charm that had to be seen to be believed. His foray began in Times Square. He stepped from a press bus with only a city detective as bodyguard and was engulfed in the crowd. One woman, less than five feet tall, wearing a yellow coat and yellow fur hat, pulled him down and gave him a resounding kiss on the cheek. "You're wonderful!" another woman yelled. ROCKY GRINNED. It is his predominant personal trait, this boyish smile. He grasped hands in every direction, turned down not a single autograph request. When a four- year-old Negro boy was thrust in his arms, Rockefeller held him up gaily. In an hour and 20 minutes, Rockefeller—on a "walking tour"—did not move more than 50 feet. The crowd came to him, egged on by a loudspeaker inviting them to "step up and say hello to Rocky." Finally, at noontime, he proceeded to the garment district, where he hammed it up by putting on a battered felt hat several sizes too small. Having a Party?
