Limping Jayhawks Must Beat 'Pokes Riddled with injuries, the Kansas Jayhawkers should still be in a petulant mood tomorrow afternoon when they invade Lewis Field at Stillwater, fortress of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Both teams have their backs to the wall. Each must win if they are to stay in contention for the Big Eight title—or, for that matter, a spot in the first division. Kickoff time is 1:30. But Kansas will go into Saturday's battle at a definite disadvantage. STARTING TACKLE and co-captain Ken Tiger will see limited action again this week because of a sprained ankle. Tiger has logged only a few minutes of playing time in the last two KU matches against Iowa State and Oklahoma. And there are three other reasons why coach Jack Mitchell said after practice yesterday, "This is the worst physical shape we've been in all year long." Handling the play-by-play will be Tom Hedrick, while KU basketball coach Dick Harp will provide color. - Wally Barnes, second unit guard and placekicker, who is sidelined with a sorained ankle. - Kent Converse, second unit center, who also has a bad ankle and will see limited action. - Duke Collins, second unit guard, who has seen only limited action in the last three games because of a knee injury. OBVIOUSLY MITCHELL is pained. And he should be, considering that he has just lost the services of his second unit interior line. But there have also been bright spots in the Jayhawker camp this week following last Saturday's 13-7 loss to Oklahoma. Sophomore Dave Crandall, former third unit T-back, has been moved into the second unit slot-back position as Tony Leiker's understudy. Studying Crandall's performance during practice this week, Mitchell said. "YOU HAVE TO FIND a place for a player like Crandall. He just keeps getting better, and nobody wants to play more than he does." Mitchell has also named Armand Baughman to start with the full-backing chores tomorrow. But he was also impressed with Ken Coleman's showing at the position in last week's loss to OU and during the week in practice. On the other hand, Oklahoma State coach Cliff Speagle's crew will be ready for Kansas. The Cowboys now stand 1-1 in Big Eight play and 2-2 overall. They opened the season with a 34-7 loss to Arkansas, now the No. 7 team in the nation. However, the 'Pokes snapped back two weeks later to down a tough Tulsa University eleven, 17-7, and followed that with a 36-16 blitzing of Colorado. LAST WEEK at Columbia, however, O-State fell to Missouri, 23-6. The Tigers got off to a quick start but then had trouble moving the ball against the mobile Cowboy line in the second half. The O-State offense revolves around halfback Don Derrick and quarterback Mike Miller. Derrick, the leading 'Poke rusher, has amassed an even 300 yards on the ground. Miller is the league's sixth best passer with 30 completions in Have You Visited the "COBWEB" at the BOOK NOOK 1021 Mass. From Coach Jack Mitchell on down, they were wondering about the score of the freshman game yesterday at varsity practice. And, when they did learn of the results of the KU fresh's first outing, they were pleased. Frosh Whip K-State, 30-0 Steve Renko scored on a two-yard run for the second score of the quarter for Kansas. Renko capped a 75-yard, 15-play drive, with a burst over tackle. The Jayhawker freshman team, rushing for 160 yards in the first half, downed Kansas State 30-0 yesterday at Manhattan. Overall, statistics show that KU made 16 first downs to K-State's five and out-rushed the Wildcats 280-65. The first Jayhawk touchdown came at the end of a 83-yard drive with Mike Johnson scoring from the one. The drive covered 83 yards in 13 plays. 60 tries for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Since the rivalry began in 1923, the Kansas-Oklahoma State series record stands at 15-5-0, in KU's favor. However, the Hawkers consistently have had trouble with Oklahoma State at Stillwater since 1954 when the 'Pokes trounced KU, 47-14. In 1956, Kansas edged O-State 21-13; in '58, Cowboy Larry Rundle's 36-yard touchdown dash gave State a 5-3 triumph, and in 1960, the 'Pokes lost a hard-fought 14-7 verdict. Sims Stokes made a 28-yard run do for the next score. The scoring march started on the Wildcat 38 when Agenhart Ellis, a tackle, recovered a K-State fumble. University Daily Kansan Page 5 A pass interception by Stokes set up the final touchdown. Fullback Kent Craft scored on a 20-yard run Renko scored four more points with two extra point conversion runs and Joe Exposito made one two-pointer. KU plays Missouri's fresh here Nov. 12.
