Fall1962 Vox Populi Platform The Vox Populi party platform ratified last night reads: 1. Vox Populi believes that the ethnic or racial origin of any individual has no effect upon his potential to become a fully integrated and useful member of society. It is the opinion of the members of Vox Populi that segregation and any denial of basic human rights are moral wrongs, and that their abolition should be a primary aim of both state and federal governments. Accordingly, we are in complete favor of the admission of James Meredith to the University of Mississippi, and we feel that his assimilation into academic life should be aided by both students and faculty. We also support all organizations and committees recognized by the University of Kansas who are intelligently attempting to solve problems of discrimination on campus. However, we recommend that the Human Rights Committee of the ASC work in conjunction with the Lawrence Human Rights Commission in handling problems of civil rights involving the city of Lawrence itself. In addition, we feel that discriminatory clauses in fraternities and sororites are not coherent with American ideals of equal opportunity and free choice, and that the solution of this problem should be reached through negotiations between the Human Rights Committee of the All Student Council and the fraternities and sororities involved. 2. Vox Populi believes that any specific regimentation of the scope or policy of the All Student Council would be detrimental to its proper functioning. Vox does believe, however, that these general guide lines should be followed: a. The All Student Council should determine its own course of action bearing the opinions of the student body in mind, and not be dictated to by any outside individuals or groups; b. The primary concern of the All Student Council should continue to be issues directly related to the campus. Thursdav. Oct. 25. 1962 University Daily Kansan 3. Vox Populi shall establish an ASC interdepartmental committee of sports, health and recreation. Its purpose will be to promote the physical well being and health of all KU students. This committee shall work for: a. Improvement and co-ordination of the intramural proram; b. Betterment of health and recreational facilities; c. The maintenance of a high level of personal health and physical fitness among all students; d. Active support of all intercollegiate athletic contests. 4. Vox Populi shall establish a board to advise students on enrollment procedure and class scheduling to consist of five students from the College and two students from each of these schools: Law, Journalism, Graduate, Pharmacy, Engineering, Fine Arts, Business and Education. The students of this board shall be appointed by the student body president with the approval of the Deans of the respective schools. This board will function in its advisory capacity during enrollment. 5. Vox Populi shall establish a student-faculty committee to be responsible to the ASC. The duties of this committee will be to regulate the use of university facilities for and set policy on the sponsorship of any dance or concert sponsored by a student organization. This committee will also seek to establish, through the Big Eight Student Government Association, means to secure and schedule talent for concerts or dances at Big Eight universities, thus enabling these universities to profit from collective buying power. 6. Vox Populi will require the health committee of the ASC to investigate, with the assistance of the University housing office, any reasonable complaints concerning the food and sanitation conditions in any University residence hall. The health committee will then report its findings and recommendations to the ASC for further action. to the Templin, Lewis and Hashinger complex. 7. Vox Populi will work for additional traffic entrances and exits 8. Vox Populi will instruct the secretarial committee of the ASC to send a list of all ASC committees to the president of each organized living group on the campus. Lists will also be made available to any student on request. This list will outline the purpose and function of each committee and will contain the names of the people on the committee. Supplements will be added when and if changes are made.
