For Legalized Abortion Editor: I would like to comment on Mr. Larry Page's letter in the Daily Kansas of Oct. 22 on the broadening of the legal basis for abortion. For those who do accept Mr. Page's conception of the nature of man, abortions for other than the most extreme therapeutic reasons would be murder and would be wrong. So those who do accept his views, or similar ones, and who also govern their actions in accordance with their views, would not get an abortion. However, our society does not demand adherence to these views from all its members, and therefore should not make into laws the consequences of such views, for this abridges the freedom of those who do not hold those views. There are some people who would hold that the killing of a fetus is not murder, and is therefore justified to a greater extent than our present laws allow. If the unborn fetus is not considered as a separate member of society, then its killing for economic reasons although not to be taken lightly, does not endanger the survival or well-being of society or of the state, and therefore the government has no right to legislate in the way in which it has about such matters. Up to now, we have spoken of the problem in the abstract. However, we can also look at the problem concretely, as it exists in our present society. We then observe that some people, who either do not hold the body-soul conception of man, or who do not let it influence their actions to a great extent, will get abortions anyway. Illegal abortions are usually much more dangerous than abortions performed in a legal setting with proper equipment and qualified personnel. Thus if we wish to save the lives (and souls) of people who do in fact have abortions, we should let them have them in the safest setting possible, which would be a legal setting. Those whose beliefs conflict with their getting an abortion on other than therapeutic grounds need not do so, of course. But they have no right, at least in our society, to argue against abortion from a particular philosophical viewpoint. David C. Scott David C. A U.S. Agency In regard to "Pace Corps Committee to Request $1,098," in the Oct. 22 Daily Kansan: Editor: The Peace Corps is a federal project as is the U. S. Army, etc. If the ASC feels that monetary support is due in the Peace Corps camp, when do they expect us to start giving money to ROTC, AFROTC or NROTC, etc. The Peace Corps was created by the U. S. Government and is, and should be, financed by the U. S. government. If the ASC feels that they should appropriate this money to an outside agency our dorm could use a little. Perhaps this idea should be put to a popular vote. If we have this much surplus money, we should consider lowering the $34 activity fee.
