Moving in for the tackle is OU tackle Ralph Neely (77). OU voodoo and three Sooner backs from Texas had the Kansas Javhawkers by the tail Saturday. KU, fresh from two early season conference victories over Colorado and Iowa State, was knocked from the top of the Big Eight standings by Bud Wilkinson's Oklahoma Sooners, 13-7, before a Memorial Stadium crowd of 38,000. Losing to Oklahoma in Memorial Stadium is nothing new for the Jayhawkers. The Sooner-Memorial Stadium jinx began in 1947 when Wilkinson succeeded Jim Tatum as OU head coach. Since that time, the Sooners have not lost at Lawrence. THE LAST KU victory over Oklahoma here came in 1946, when a 34-yard field goal by Vince Turner gave the Hawks a 16-13 victory and a piece of the Bix Six championship. Since then, Kansas has Pitchers Sold Ine Houston Colts announced today that they have sold relief pitcher Bobby Tiefenauer and outfielder Jim Pendleton to their Oklahoma City farm club as part of a 10-player deal. Tiefenauer and Pendleton had been with the Colts throughout the entire 1962 baseball season. lost eight straight to OU in Memorial Stadium. In addition to the hex, other factors contributed to the jawhawk's downfall—namely three OU backs from Texas and a hard-nosed Sooner defense. Kansas had drawn first blood in the opening quarter with a flashy offensive show, as KU quarterback Rodger McFarland kept the ball in the air and moved the Big Blue offensive into Oklahoma territory. This drive was climaxed when McFarland riffed a 38-yard scoring pass up the middle to Tony Leiker. Gary Duff's conversion made it 7-0. Fraternity Jewelry Badges, Rings, Novelties, Sweatshirts. BUT FOLLOWING the McFarland-to-Leiker aerial bomb, a strong Oklahoma defense held the Hawkers at bay. The Kansas offensive machine, which had picked up more than 250 yards on the ground in both of the previous conference contests, could muster only 139 yards Saturday. Following the initial KU tally, Oklahoma completely bottled up the Kansas wide game. KU halfback Gayle Sayers, who went into the OU game as the Big Eight's leading rusher, was held to 17 yards rushing in nine tries. This left most of the ball-carrying load on fullbacks Armand Baughman and Ken Coleman, who found out how solid OU's interior defensive line really is. The Oklahoma offense was stymied even more than KU's—until Joe Doooney, a 207-pound speedster from Fort Worth, who picked up 115 yards on 19 carries, finally got the Sooner machine moving in the third period. Looney burst up the middle on a halfback trap play, cut to the sideline, and rammed 61 yards for the first Oklahoma touchdown. Butch Metcalf's conversion knotted the score at 7-all. Following Looney's touchdown jaunt, Oklahoma still showed no sign of moving the ball consistently against the swift Kansas line until early in the fourth quarter when the Sooners marched 56 yards in 9 plays for the deciding touchdown. THE TOUGH Kansas defense was rocked when OU quarterback Monte Deere, an Amarillo, Tex., senior, faked the ball into the line and then threw a 29-vard strike to end John Flynn on the KU 28. Fullback Jim Grisham, of Olney, Tex., carried on five of the next six plays, and moved the ball to the Kansas 3. Deere then faked the ball to Grisham, who charged into the line, and circled his own left end for the score. JIM'S CAFE 838 Mass. At the time, it appeared an important play, because 12 minutes remained in the game. But following the KU touchdown in the first period, the Jayhawkers had not penetrated past the Oklahoma 45—and they failed to do so in those remaining 12 minutes. PARK PLAZA SO. INC.
