Page 8 University Daily Kansan Monday, Oct. 22, 1962 'Syracuse Run Was A Bigger Thrill'—Looney As expected, the Oklahoma dressing room was a scene of jubilation and elation following the Sooners' 13-7 victory over a slightly-favored Kansas team Saturday. Coach Bud Wilkinson was making his way around the OU dressing room, shaking hands and patting backs of his victorious Sooners. Reporters huddled around Joe Don Looney, the Oklahoma halfback who broke away on a 61-yard touchdown dash late in the third quarter while other players shouted, "Somebody interview me!" and "Eeeeeaaah, we beat 'em!" BUT LOONEY was the popular figure in the visitor's dressing room because of the irony that moved him into the second-team right half-back position earlier last week and gave him the chance to grind through the Jayhawker forward wall for 115 yards in 19 carries. He had been moved up from the third team fullback slot Tuesday when OU's starting right halfback, Jackie Cowan, injured his knee in practice and was forced to the sidelines for the remainder of the season. Looney had not run from the fullback position since he was one of Rodger McFarland's backfield teammates in high school at Fort Worth. Tex He said that Oklahoma inserted the halfback draw play, which "Toughest defense we've played all year," he said. "They ganged up pretty good on those tackles." LOONEY, WHO earlier in the season broke loose in the waning seconds of the OU-Syracuse game for a 60-yard dash and the winning Oklahoma touchdown, compared the two touchdown sprints. started him off on his long TD jaunt, expressly for the KU game. "My run against Syracuse gave me a bigger thrill than the one today (Saturday), because it was the winning score and came in the last seconds of the game," he said. But the OU star had respect for the Kansas forward wall. OKLAHOMA CENTER and cocaptain Wayne Lee nodded his head in partial agreement. But Coach Wilkinson said later that the halfback trap had not been installed expressly for the KU game. "The KU line is a lot quicker than Texas," he said, "but the Texas boys are a little stronger." "In fact," he said, "this is one of the oldest plays in football—a simple halfback draw." "Well," replied Wilkinson with a wry grin, "if we win next week, we'll still be undefeated in the conference." "With guys like Coleman, Leiker, and McFarland in that backfield along with Sayers, you just can't concentrate on one person," he said. "We won by playing good, strong, heads-up football." The Sooners, who were playing their first conference game of the season Saturday, meet Kansas State at Manhattan next weekend WILKINSON also said that the Sooners did not stack their defense to the outside to stop the power "AFTER YOUR WIN here today, how do you feel about the Big Eight race now?" One reporter shot a final question at Wilkinson as he was leaving the dressing room. Chances are the OU coach will be smiling after that one, too.
