"It gives foreign students a bad picture of Mexico in the beginning." The KU International Club is making a direct appeal to the government of Mexico for permission for foreign students to cross the Mexican border Dec.19. THE MEXICAN consulate gave no reasons for denials, according to trip organizers Fritz Gysin, Basel, Switzerland, graduate student and Helmut Reichelt, Konstanz, Germany, graduate student. Gysin said the club will attempt to write directly to the Mexican government for permission. The action was decided upon after the Mexican consulate in Kansas City refused authorization to KU students from 46 countries. Peter Ling, Hong Kong graduate student who helped organize the trip last year, said the club called the Mexican government long distance last year to obtain permission for certain students. Permission was denied. THE CLUB HAD REQUESTED permission for students from 67 countries to make a 10-day tour of Mexico. Twenty-one countries were authorized by the consulate. The countries granted permission were Germany, Canada, Venezuela, Great Britain, the Philippines, France, Costa Rica, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Brazil, Japan, Chile, Sweden, Puerto Rico, Netherlands, Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, Uruguay and the United States. CLUB MEMBERS felt the countries' association with communism and their respective visa policies weighed heavily in Mexican tourist policy. "They turned down 12 foreign students earlier. Three they turned down on the last day. They were all packed and ready to go," he said. "Some of those countries refused permission won't let Mexicans go in," Ling said. The club hopes to have 100 students make the trip this year. The group will visit Mexico City, Oaxaca and Acapulco. Approximate cost of transportation and accommodations for the ten-day trip will be $125. Deadline for the first $15 deposit is Nov. 15. The remaining amount is due Dec. 5. Non-members can make the trip for $125. plus a $2 fee. Faculty Concerts Are Rescheduled Two faculty concerts scheduled for this week have been cancelled. McNeil told the Mid-Continent Conference on Higher Adult Education Sunday. The report, addressed to extension leaders from a 15-state area, was based on findings of a nationwide survey made by McNeil and Fred Harrington, new president of the University of Wisconsin. The survey was made for the Carnegie Corporation of New York. DR. McNEIL FOUND that university presidents tend to consider adult education a self-supporting but minor goal of their institutions. He said deans and vice-presidents consider anything beyond undergraduate or graduate level research to be of little importance. "Most universities do only enough for adult education to maintain the image of public service, but there is no philosophical commitment for the use of hard cash and faculty resources," he said. Patronize Your Kansan Advertisers He also found a reluctance among faculty to realize the number of evening students is beginning to rival that of day students. DR. McNEIL SAID, however, that there are enough schools which now recognize the importance of adult education to indicate a possible growing interest. A panel of deans and administrators discussed the report and decided that the strengthening of the adult education programs depends upon public demand and financial support.
