Page 4 University Daily Kansan Monday, Oct. 22, 1962 Annual Book Sale Scheduled for Wed. New books, old books and rare books will go on sale for as low as 10 cents Wednesday at Watson Library. The annual surplus duplicate sale will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the library if the weather is good or in the undergraduate smoking room if the weather is bad. From noon to 1 p.m. a special auction of unusual items will be held. ABOUT THE unusual items Stuart Forth, assistant director of Watson Library, would only say, "The students will have to come and see what the items are." The regular sale, Mr. Forth said, will include excellent books. "We are selling them because we either have copies of the books or we cannot exchange them with other libraries." The books are a wonderful opportunity for students to build a personal library, get research material or purchase books in their field of study, he said. The books will be arranged according to price. They will include hardbacks, paperbacks and some collections. THE LIBRARY has gathered these books from various dealers and libraries all over the world. They cover every field of study and many are in foreign languages. They range from novels by Sinclair Lewis to rare botany reports by the state of New York. There is also a large collection of old periodicals that will be on sale. Possible Khrushchev Visit Seen as Crisis Indicator WASHINGTON — (UPI) — West German Foreign Minister Gerhard Schroeder believes Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev will come to the United States to talk with President Kennedy only if he wants to avoid a crisis over Berlin. Schroeder said in a television interview (Issues and Answers—ABC) that Krushchev was "trying with all sorts of talks to find out how such a meeting" would be received in the United States. The German official said Khrushchev might have two intentions, "first to make a real contribution for a rapprochement, or to find a rapprochement, or to find a point of departure for further increasing tensions." "I have the impression." Schroeder said, "that if he comes he would rather try in a peaceful way to advance one step more." LONDON — (UPI) — The London Daily Mail said today its national opinion poll has showed a "dramatic swing" in favor of British entry into the European Common Market. Britons Favor Link to Europe The poll, which has been accurate in recent British by-elections, indicated that 47.6 per cent of the electorate favored entry, 40.1 per cent opposed it and 12.3 per cent said they had no opinion. IN THE LAST poll Sept. 27, the positions were almost reversed. At that time, 40.8 per cent favored entry, 45.9 per cent opposed it and 13.3 per cent had no opinion. The poll was the newspaper's first since all three major British parties held their annual conferences. Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and Liberal Party leader Jo Grimond made major speeches favoring entry. Labor Party leader Hugh Gaitskell opposed it. THE POLL indicated, however that labor still leads in popular support among the voters. The persons polled, asked, "If there were a general election now, how would you vote? Gave the conservatives 36.6 per cent, labor 41.3 per cent and the liberals 18.6 per cent. This showed a 2 per cent rise in conservative percentages and a 3 per cent boost in labor strength but a 4 per cent drop in the previously rising poll popularity of the liberals.
