Page 12 University Daily Kansan Friday. Oct. 19. 1962 The Egg 'Premiers To Receptive Crowd By Rose Ellen Osborne "The Egg"—Felicien Marceau's French farce on life, love and sex—opened at Swarthout Theatre last night. The audience approved. Terry Kovak, Wichita junior and leading man in the production by F. Cowles Strickland, visiting professor of speech and drama raised Midwestern eyebrows as he launched into a detailed explanation of the average man's sex life. A FEW SLY snickers and giggles went up from the audience before Kovak made real contact. The audience was with him from that point on as he sought to lead them beyond sex itself and to expose the superficiality of society. "Don't be misled by appearances," said the author, "people are seldom what they pretend to be." To prove this, Kovak tells the audience how he beat society's "system." BY SEEMING to be shy and retiring, he murders his wife and lives to tell about it. Kovak pulls off the hoax beautifully. In doing so he reveals a much deeper character than the wise-cracking jokester he portrays in the first act. This leads the audience to believe they too have been fooled by appearances until they realize that the young Frenchman is searching for intellectual companionship. His wife was having an affair with an old beau, played by Kenneth Hill, Olathe junior, and so he killed her. Hill is convincing, but not outstanding as the old boyfriend. He fails to draw a distinct line between the character's suavity and his cowardice. Kovak's role is a kind of solliquy. The story takes the form of an animated biography and Kovak plays most of his lines to the audience. THE PART is one of the longest in theater history, with Kovak on the stage continuously throughout the two-hour performance. Yet the KU actor showed no apparent strain from the testing performance. With Kovak doing most of the speaking, the other members of the cast seemed to file on stage like storybook characters. They all lived within the egg which Kovak is trying to break into. Like their personal and business lives inside the egg, their speech, actions and walk are affected to the point of farce. A favorite with the audience was Caroline Kriesel, instructor of speech and drama, who plays the Frenchman's first romance, an aging spinster, and his mother-in-law. MISS KRIESEL was charmingly giddy. In fact this was the vein of the entire play until the second act, when Kovak suddenly became serious. Strickland's directing is excellent and keeps the action fast-moving. The 16 settings of the play are changed before the audience's eyes, sometimes to the tune of a French record playing in the background Although the play is French, Strickland didn't encumber the fast moving action with phony French accents. "You can't take the Kansas out of a cast in three weeks," Strickland said. These statements were made by President Newton Oct. 3, replying to a letter from Goldwater which said: 'Our way' is the only American way. . . . CU President - (Continued from page 1) "You (Newton) either do not know what is going on in the university, or you don't care, and in charity, I will presume the former. To put it briefly, I doubt that you have the interest or the concern to be in the position you hold." THE CONTROVERSY over Mitcham's attack on Goldwater came only a few days after an editorial in the Colorado Daily which said the editors hoped the Colorado football team would have a losing season this year, possibly prompting the university administration to deemphasize football or make it openly professional at the school. The two issues have inspired editors in the Rocky Mountain News attacking "subversion" at the university, and have led to public attacks such as this from a Republican candidate for the board of regents: "IT IS SHOCKING and unbelievable that such a thing can happen in the United States, Mitcham attacks and ridicules all that is dear to most Americans — God, democracy, free enterprise and the like." A news service of the National Student Association said Althen, dismissed as editor, has not decided what he will do next. The NSA also reported: "An all-campus referendum on the issue has been scheduled for next week. At least four members of the newspaper staff have resigned, and it is not certain that the Daily will continue to operate." A student campaign is underway to force a change in the university policy whereby the Daily is partly subsidized through student fees. A new student newspaper, the New Conservative, has been established as a rival to the Colorado Daily, the Denver Post reported. Otsuka Will Discuss Japanese Economics A leading Japanese economics authority will discuss "Economic Development—Japan and the West" at 4 p.m. Monday in Room 306 of the Kansas Union. Prof. Hisao Otsuka, professor of economic history at the University of Tokyo, participated in the Second International Economic History Conference in France in August and is now visiting U.S. universities.
