Friday, Oct. 19, 1962 University Daily Kansan Page 9 Fierce Line Action Expected to me A clash of Oklahoma and Kansas lines, one powerful enough to shake the Memorial Stadium press box windows, is expected tomorrow when the two teams meet. Although the Jayhawkers are favored to win, the game should be close. That has been the pattern of the last three meetings between Bud Wilkinson, Oklahoma's Big Eight coaching dean, and one of his brightest pupils, Jack Mitchell. The Sooners won, 7-6, three years ago; escaped with a 13-13 tie two years ago, and went down in this series for the first time since 1946. 0-10 last year at Owen Field in Norman. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m., with a self-lift of 38,000 expected in Kickoff is 1:30 p.m., with a sell-out crowd of 38,000 expected in Memorial Stadium. By winning, the Jayhawkers can accomplish three important strides: - Maintain their lead in the still young Big Eight race . . . they now hold a half-game edge at 2-0-0 over Nebraska, Missouri, and Oklahoma State, all 1-0-0. - Score their first back-to-back wins over the Sooners since 1929-30. - Elevate Mitchell abreast of his former boss Wilkinson at 2-2-1. Kansas has climbed atop the standings by whipping Colorado, 35-8, and Iowa State, 29-8. But they must continue to stay on the pole against Nebraska and Missouri, who will be respectively favored over Kansas State and Oklahoma State at Lincoln and Columbia Saturday. Oklahoma can leap a long way along the comeback trail by beating the Hawks. The Sooners have been strangely absent from the conference throne room for the last two years after an unprecedented stay of 14 straight seasons. Can the Sooners then be far beyond, despite their record? Although the Sooner record is no better than 1-2-0, Oklahoma has been playing in a tougher league than the Jayhawkers . . . Syracuse, Notre Dame and Texas. Each decision has been narrow, 6-3, 7-13, and 6-9. The Longhorns covered one fumble in the end zone for their touchdown and snared another in deep Sooner territory to set up their field goal. On the skinny strength of these two bobbles, Texas moved to the top of the national AP standings this week. Sooner Game Tickets Gone More than 38,000 persons will fill Memorial Stadium tomorrow for the KU-Oklahoma game. The sellout will be the 12th in Kansas history. All bleacher and permanent seating was sold by yesterday. An additional 216 temporary seats, located on the track, were expected to be sold by noon today, according to Earl Falkenstein, athletic business manager. Other sellouts for games between the Jayhawks and Sooners here were in 1948.1952 and 1960. The record for the largest single home game attendance came in 1949 when Kansas played host to Missouri. A total of 41,500 persons looked on that day when KU lost, 34-28. PATRONIZE YOUR • ADVERTISERS • State Farm Insurance Paul E. Hodgson Local Agent Off. Ph. VI 3-5666 530 W 23rd. Res. Ph. "If they had a Bill Vessels, an Eddie Crowder, Leon Heath or Buck McPhail in that backfield, they would be as good as they were a few years ago," says Mitchell. Although rolling for 64 points in their last two games, the Jayhawkers have been even more impressive on defense. Their four-game rushing yield is 103.7 yards, total defense 197.5, and scoring defense 4.7. Their overall record is 3-1-0, with only a 3-6 loss to Texas Christian in the opener, marring the ledger. Kansas won last year on Wally Barnes' 35-yard field goal and a pass from John Hadl to Larry Allen, which saw the big end shed three tacklers near the goal. This victory shook the shackles of 15 years. But Kansas still hasn't won this match at Memorial Stadium since 1946 when Paul Turner drove his historic 37-yard field goal through the rain in the final minute for a 16-13 upset. The Jayhawkers missed winning here two years ago when John Suder, their finest field goal specialist in history, blew a field goal attempt from the OU six with just 2:4 remaining on the clock. They had to come from behind to score a 13-13 tie after Ronnie Hartline powered two drives from kickoff for Sooner touchdowns. Coach Mitchell will send up a new fullback starter in Armand Baughman, who reclaimed the job from Ken Colemen, in their seasonlong fight. Baughman rolled-up TRADING POST $704\% $ Mass. Iowa State is still as good a football team as everybody was saying it was before the season began. But Kansas defeated them decisively." 14th & Tenn. BOB WARD, an OU assistant coach, scouted the KU 29-8 win over Iowa State. "Kansas is an excellent team," he said, "as good as Texas. In my opinion they should be undefeated. "Their offense is slot and they fiip-flop just like Texas. It is a potent offense. Their starting backfield is well-balanced. They are primarily a running team but they do it well. "They are very sound defensively. Nobody has been able to drive to a touchdown on running plays against their mobile line." "He is by far the best quarterback we will see all year with the possible exception of Claridge of Nebraska. WARD ALSO COMMENTED on KU personnel. "McFarland, their quarterback," Ward said, "is the man who makes them click. I say that with all due respect to their tremendous sophomore halfback, Gale Sayers. McFarland looks as good as Hadi to me. He's a dedicated football player, the spark that makes them a good team. "Coleman, their fullback who hurt us so much last year." Ward continued in the press conference, "is a good straight ahead runner but his greatest asset is his blocking ahead of Sayers. Baughman, his sub, is almost as good.
