University Daily Kansan Page 3 VOX, UP Debate Goals Before Freshman Group Thirty-five freshman women from Gertrude Sellards Pearson and Corbin Halls heard Vox Populi and University Party representatives explain student government and debate party issues. Wednesday night. The meeting was sponsored by the All Student Council. Dean Salter, Garden City senior and ASC chairman, opened the discussion by pointing out the similarities of KU student government and national government. Pat Wilson, ASC representative from the women's large dormitory district, explained UP party history and structure. HE ADDED that the number of ASC representatives elected from each dormitory depends upon the number of girls who vote. John Grothusen, Ellsworth sophomore and Vox Greek vice-president, told about Vox's party structure. "About the only difference between Vox and UP party organization is that Vox has a president and UP has party co-chairman," he said. It started when a freshman woman asked Roger Wilson, Vox president, whether Vox actually is an "all-Greek party." PARTY REPRESENTATIVES clashed over the alleged Greek-independent composition of the two parties during the question and answer period. Wilson replied that Vox is "more representative" than UP and said that in last spring's elections, 70 per cent of the UP candidates were Greek and only 30 per cent were independents. MISS WILSON, defending UP, replied that as long as UP has existed, Vox has never elected a representative from a large men's dormitory district or the women's scholarship hall district. "And the only girl ever elected to represent Vox from the women's large dormitory district dropped from school and was unable to finish her term as representative," she added. Another student asked UP spokesman Lee Ayres why his party uses an open primary instead of a closed one such as Vox conducts. "UP FEELS THAT the representative from a living group should be chosen by the living group itself, not by a committee, as Vox does," Ayres said. The student then asked Ayres if an open primary doesn't result in a popularity contest. "We feel that you girls are smart enough not to elect a 'dumb blonde' type, even if she were the most popular girl in the dorm," Ayres replied. Our future is in the hands of men not yet hired At Western Electric we play a vital role in helping meet the complex needs of America's vast communications networks. And a career at Western Electric, the manufacturing arm of the nation-wide Bell Telephone System, offers young men the exciting opportunity to help us meet these important needs. Today, Western Electric equipment reduces thousands of miles to fractions of seconds. Even so, we know that our present communications systems will be inadequate tomorrow; and we are seeking ways to keep up with—and anticipate—the future. For instance, right now Western Electric engineers are working on various phases of solar cell manufacture, miniaturization, data transmission, futuristic telephones, electronic central offices, and computer-controlled production lines—to name just a few. To perfect the work now in progress and launch many new communications products, projects, procedures, and processes not yet in the mind of man - we need quality-minded engineers. If you feel that you can meet our standards, consider the opportunities offered by working with our company. In a few short years, you will be Western Electric.
