University Daily Kansan Page 7 Warner Says Taverns Refuse To Admit Negro Three of four Lawrence taverns Monday night refused to serve beer to Negro graduate student Ivory Nelson, the Civil Rights Council chairman charged last night. Don Warner, Topeka senior and council chairman, told the CRC that two of the taverns visited were known to have refused on-premises service to Negroes in the past. They have not changed their practices, Warner said. "The other two taverns were picked at random," he said. Warner, who accompanied Nelson, said the Lawrence Negro graduate student was told he could not be served on the premises, but could take his order outside. Nelson declined and walked out of the tavern. The CRC chairman promised more taverns will be visited in the next two weeks. He said the four taverns approached, only one of which served Nelson, were not representative of Lawrence night spots. Warner said a "sit-in would be a distant, last resort measure." "Our policy is to simply talk these things out," Warner said. Philosopher Feels Southern Italy Open for Communism A German philosopher yesterday said, the influences of modern Italian life are shattering the "closed world" of Southern Italian peasants, thus opening the field for Communism. E. G. Friedmann, professor of the history of American culture and director of the American Institute at the University of Munich, Germany, was speaking at a luncheon meeting of the Faculty Forum. PROF. FRIEDMANN spent several years in Southern Italy where he was awarded a Fulbright grant to study peasant philosophy. "Peasants sense an orderliness of things," he said. "They live as if everything—even life and death—are part of the cosmic forces. They live in their own small, limited ways where everything is accepted and sanctioned without question," he said. "Then the poor Italian peasant sees a movie or some other form of propaganda. He sees Americans, how elegantly they walk, how smartly they dress and how they seem to have more time and money than they need. "Then the peasant realizes there are elements which prove that not everything has to be accepted. His whole system of beliefs collapses. Unity is destroyed," he added, "THEN COME THE shrewd people—the Communists, who try to show there is an analogy of embracing all and the Communist system which embraces all." He said Karl Marx incorrectly predicted Communism would spread only in highly industrial areas. 912 Mass. - VI 3-0151 PORTABLES - $49.50 up SERVICE SALES RENTALS All Kinds Office Equipment Printing, Mimeographing and Duplicating Pick up — Delivery Bud's Boys Are Back...
