Oct. 18, 1962 Oklahoma Lacks Offense NORMAN, Okla. — (Special) — Development of more offensive punch is Oklahoma's need as the Sooners head into the 60th annual Kansas game Saturday at Lawrence. Defense and kicking appear Oklahoma's strengths. But the offense, hamstruck by injuries to so many key backs, managed but six first downs and 71 yards rushing against Texas and faces more trouble this week from Kansas' furiously attacking line. It's a battle between rival sophomoric outfits. Each team retains only two starters from last year. Oklahoma will employ 11 sophomores in its two playing units, KU will use eight. This count includes Charles Mayhue, Oklahoma's defensive specialist from Ada, Okla., and Ron Oelschlager, Kansas' defensive ace from Marion, Kan. Although Oklahoma's record stands only 1-2, the Sooner defense against Texas was rock-ribbed and Record Dates to 1905 By Harold Keith OU Sports Publicity Director His blond tresses rippling in the warm wind, Leonard Runbeck, Oklahoma's Swedish center from Linsborg, Kan., belted the kickoff 68 yards to the Kansas 2-yard line. That was a mistake. Arthur Charles "Bert" Pooler, Kansas' fancy-stepping quarterback who was nicknamed after Dr. Bert Kennedy, the Kansas dentist-coach, had plenty of time to cuddle the old roundish ball to his blue jersey and pick his path through Coach Bennie Owen's Oklahoma Boomers who with chins jutted out menacingly, followed Runbeck's long kickoff up the limestone gridiron at old McCook field in Lawrence. **POOLER AVOIDED** the charging Oklahomaans as though they were process-servers, running back Rumbeck's boot 108 yards to a touchdown. That was 1905 and football fields then were 110 yards long. Pooler, a law student from the shortgrass town of Beloit, died in 1938 but his feat still stands as the longest kickoff return of all Kansas-Oklahoma football history and the Sooners and Jayhawkers have been playing since 1903. Oklahoma's pass defense, with backs Mayhue, Paul Lea and Virgil Boll of Wichita, Kan., entrusted up the deep responsibility, broke up the first five Texas passes and held the Longhorns to a total of 21 yards through the air. No opponent has yet scored aerially on Coach Bud Wilkinson's new team. Ralph Wolfson, Mgr. Vernie Wilson, Asst. Mgr. 743 Mass. — VI 3-4366 WILL THE YOUNG Sooners be up for the blazing Kansas challenge? Oklahoma's mental eagerness for the back-to-back Notre Dame and Texas contests was right at the peak of what coaches can ask of players. But both games were lost. Can Oklahoma play with the same hunger a third straight week? The backfield casualty report remains discouraging. Halfback Jackie Cowan, who sped 46 yards to almost score against Syracuse and bucked 13 to Notre Dame's 3 in the final moments to almost save that game, is believed lost for the season because of a freak knee twist. Right half Melvin Sandersfeld, out of the Syracuse and Irish games with an ankle sprain, re-hurt the ankle against Texas. Jim Grisham, sophomore fullback, leads the Sooner defensive chart through the first three games with 37 unassisted tackles, followed by right guard Leon Cross 20, halfback Charles Mayhue 13 and halfback Virgil Boll 10.
