Ali Hassan, Hyderabad, India, sophomore, said this last night at a meeting of the Great Men of the 20th Century Study Group. He said that if the number participating in the movement were large enough, it would be impossible to arrest everyone who elected to steer a non-violent course. "HOWEVER," HASSAN SAID, "passive resistance must also depend on the mutual respect of human rights between the oppressed and the oppressor." The study group centered its discussion on Mahatma Gandhi's movement that resulted in independence for India. Hassan explained that a passive resistance movement would not work as effectively in Hungary as it had in India because of the brutality of communist aggressors in Budapest. HASSAN DEFINED passive resistance as "complete isolation from Convocation List To Be Counted Robert Swan, Topeka junior and chairman of the KU Peace Corps committee, last night said the petitions for a student body convocation during Peace Corps Week are "coming along well." Committee members will meet tonight to count the final number of names on the petitions. Swan said George Waggoner, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and English professor, and L. C. Woodruff, dean of students and professor of biology and entomology, had signed the petition. "Gandhi's passive resistance resulted in the deliverance of 4,000,000 human beings. It was one of the greatest experiments in the world, and it came within an inch of succeeding." "They were convinced that a bloodless revolution was the right way to gain independence from Great Britain." he said. "The people weren't breaking any laws," he added. "They just would refuse to pay taxes and obey laws that were unjust." Hassan said there was one group in India during this revolutionary period which favored the use of force. The Indian National Army had consulted with the Japanese to invade India. THEN, IN 1947. India was granted independence and became a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Turning to Gandhi's influence on society today, the study group pointed out that the passive resistance movement advocated an end to the arms race, a world-wide peace organization, more active participation in the U.N., disarmament and a ban on nuclear testing. Hassan declined to comment on the influence of passive resistance in Goa, where India abandoned the theory and resorted to force.
