6 Wednesday, July 22, 1992 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN K.C. music festival provides relief from after-finals blues More than 150,000 expected to attend this year's attraction By Becky Lucas Kansan staff writer If singing the blues sounds familiar after finals, the second annual Blues and Jazz Festival could offer entertainment that will mellow the soul. The festival will take place from noon to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Penn Valley Park, Pershing Road and Main Street in Kansas City, Mo. Last year's two-day event attracted more than 110,000 spectators, and weather cooperating, more than 150,000 are expected this year, said Roger Naber, president of the Kansas City Blues Society and co-owner of the Grand Emporium. The festival, presented by the Kansas City Blues Society, the Jazz Festival Committee and numerous corporate sponsors, will feature 14 national acts and 14 local acts. Local food vendors will have at least "That's K.C.'s musical history." Naber said about the event, which mixes distinctive styles of music. "K.C. was the city where jazz spring out of the blues, and we're recognized worldwide for it. We're just out here trying to put K.C. back on the map." Blues, jazz and youth stages will be set up for audience members to gather around and enjoy the musical acts throughout the day, Naber said. Local food vendors will have at least 20 booths set up for concert-goers. The featured acts on Saturday night are Buckwheat Ydeco on the blues stage and Kenny Kirkland on the jazz stage. On Sunday night, Delbert McClinton will be the last act on the blues stage, and Jay McShannon will be the last act on the jazz stage. "There's a wide variety of musicians who will play to a wide variety of tastes," Naber said about the scheduled performers. Last year most people were interested in blues. Naber said. Naber recommends that people either car-pool or park on Main Street, and ride the Metro to the festival to avoid parking nightmares. The event is free. A portion of the money earned from beverage and merchandise sales will go to the two organizations that put on the event, Naber said. Those needing more information can call 800-530-KCMO. But for those planning to attend, Naber offered this advice: "Get there early and stay late." 1 The Kansas City Blues and Jazz Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday in Penn Valley Park, next to Liberty Memorial. Entertainment will be provided by 14 national and 14 Kansas City acts from noon to 8:30 p.m. The event is free.
