THE BOOK OF GOURMET ENTREES KU official to sort out famous Kansan's mail By Chris Moeser Kansan staff writer William Allen White's public writings at the Emporia Emaja won him a Pulitzer Prize and unprecedented influence during the first half of the 20th century as a small-town newspaper editor. Now a University of Kansas administrator is working to compile the private writings of the legendary Kansan. Del Brinkman, vice chancellor for academic affairs, will take a six-month leave beginning in January to study White's private papers. The research is partially financed by the Freedom Foundation of Alexandria, Va. Brinkman said he would finance the rest with his own salary. Dave Shulenburger, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, will act as vice chancellor during Brinkman's leave. Brinkman's work will take him to Washington, D.C., where he will sift through the estimated 137,000 personal letters of White on file at the Library of Congress. The library has 198 linear feet of shelf space occupied by White's correspondence. Brinkman said he also was studying materials at Emporia State University's William Allen White Library, the Emporia Gazette offices, the Spencer Research Library, and items retained by White's granddaughter, Barbara White's letters include correspondence with the seven presidents who served from 1901-1945. "His papers present a documentation of politics that can't be found anywhere else," Brinkman said. Political leaders across the nation sought White's advice, Brinkman said. His 1896 editorial "What's the Matter with Kansas?" was a scathing attack on populism, which became Republican William McKinley's theme in his successful campaign against Democrat William Jennings Bryan. Walker, in Emporia. Del Shankel, interim executive vice chancellor, said he was glad Brinkman would have a chance to pursue research on White. White's papers are among the top 20 sets of papers of prominent Americans that need to be edited, Brinkman said. He said he hoped to separate the important papers from insignificant ones and present them in a volume or series of volumes.
