University Daily Kansan / Thursday. April 23, 1992 5 Recycling isn't only way to save the planet Kansan staff writer By Erik Bauer Although recycling is presented as a solution to environmental problems, some at the University of Kansas think it's a myth that dropping an aluminum can in the nearest recycling bin can save the planet. Sue Ask, assistant environmental ombudsman, said recyling alone was due for replacement. Reduction and reuse of waste materials actually are more helpful, she said. Ask said that most of the environmental impact occurred and most of the solid waste was created in the process. The resulting products such as aluminum and paper. "Aluminum, just because it's recyclable, doesn't it have no impacts," she said. Ask said she encouraged people to use bookbags when they shopped, instead of plastic or paper bags, and always to think about how to reuse or avoid using a product. Kris Gottschalk, environmental education coordinator for the environmental ambudsman's office, said that production also wasted energy. The world aluminum industry used nearly as much energy in 1990 as the entire continent of Africa, she said. "There's a tremendous disparity between collected recyclables and the demand for recycled products," she said. Gottschalk said that many people did not know about the entire recycling "For a lot of people, recycling is another form of disposal," she said. "Recycling is only responsible if you can dispose of it we reused or reduced that product." Gottschalk said that recycling ultimately could result in a decrease in the extraction of virgin materials but that U.S. citizens consumed too many products for recycling to have a substantial impact on the environment. Gottschalk said that 87 percent of packaging in the United States was thrown away on the first use. Yet Lawrence recycling businesses have noticed increased awareness of environmental issues in the last few years. Clair Domonske, owner of Conservation Resources, a company that offers weekly curbside pickup of aluminum, tin, glass, paper, newsprint and plastic, said his business had increased sharply in the last two years. Domonoske said the company experienced its greatest increase from July until October of 1990. Part of the immediate increase was when River City Recycling Co. went out of business in 1990. The company went from almost no customers to 600 customers in four months, Domonoske said. The growth was moderate until Sept.1991, when it slowed down. Conservation Resources currently has 1,800 customers. Patti Miller, assistant manager of Dillons at 1740 Massachusetts St., said the recycling program at that store was successful and that the number of customers who recycled had increased over the last few years. "In general, people are more aware of the environment and the problems we're facing," she said. --price at all evening shows.
