University Daily Kansan / Wednesday, April 22, 1992 13 Russian man on trial for killing spree MOSCOW — A former professor accused of murdering at least 53 people says his miserable life under communism was among the forces that pushed him to kill, Russian television reported yesterday. Andrei Chikatilio, 56, also described himself to the court in the southern Russian city of Rostov as a freak of nature and a mad beast, the ITAR-Tass news agency said. Testifying from inside a steel cage on Monday, Chikatilo described his poor life and frequent business trips in the mountains of Chile, at stations and rundown hotels. He also complained of rude bosses. The former college language teacher said he was a Communist Party member and had graduated from Marxist-Leninist schools, Russian television reported. "Possibly 55, maybe more," Chikati-so said. Chikatilio is accused of killing and mutilating 21 boys, 14 girls and 18 women since 1978, although ITAR-Tass said he confessed to more. Prosecutors say Chikatilo raped some of his victims. He has admitted having sex with at least one corpse. Most of the murders took place near Rostov, but the killing spree stretched from St. Petersburg to the Siberian city of Irkutsk. Chikatilo also is accused of killings in Ukraine and Uzbekistan. If convicted, Chikatifo faces death by firing squad. The Russian media has dubbed Chikatilo the "Forest Strip Killer," because his victims' bodies were usually found in the woods alongside rail tracks. Chikatilo was arrested in 1990. Russian newspapers have reported that another man was executed for the murder of Chikatilo's first victim before authorities realized their mistake. The Associated Press DALLAS — Dissident Libyans were enconced in a luxury hotel this week, plotting the ouster of Col. Moammar Gadhafi. "The significance is this is open and making it clear to Gadhafi we're coalescing. We are not hiding." said Secretary-General Mohamad Yusef al-Megarai of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya. "We are struggling to topple him for his crimes," said Al-Megariaf, the former Libyan ambassador to India. "It is our duty to get rid of him and regain our country." The Libyan dissidents were based in northern Chad before being forced to leave early in 1991 after a new Chadian government took power with Libyan support. About 350 former Libyan prisoners of war, who had received some rudimentary training from the United States, were resettled in the United States. The Libyans are scattered in several states, and most have chosen to stay out of politics. Several dozen are thought to have joined the National Front, one of several dissident organizations that have been trying to depose Gadhafi since 1969. U.S. officials regard them as highly unlikely to succeed. Approximately 190 dissidents attended the Dallas planning sessions.
