10 University Daily Kansan / Tuesday, April 21, 1992 Urban-design class helps plan KC rail By Janet Rorholm Kansan staff writer Eighteen students from a University of Kansas urban-design class are helping the Kansas City Area Transport Authority study a plan for a mass-transit light-rail system in the Kansas City area. Students entering their fifth year in architecture can opt to stay in Lawrence, take an internship, or choose the urban-design studio. The studio class meets at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. "The purpose of the studio is to allow students to explore a range of major civic projects in a visual way for the city," said Glen LeRoy, associate professor of architecture and urban design Students have mapped a route connecting the Riverfront area of Kansas City with downtown and Crown Center using an updated version of the street car, he said. The light-rail system, as it is called, would run in its own lane of traffic. Students study how the entire project would affect the city. In their designs, they have taken buildings the city is considering building, and placed them along the light rail system to show how the various projects can work together. John Ahrens, fifth-year architecture student from St. Louis, said the project gave more real-life experience than a hypothetical situation, which the students would be working on if they chose to stay in Lawrence.
