University Daily Kansan / Tuesday, April 21, 1992 5 Madonna materializes deal to form multi-media group The Associated Press NEW YORK — Madonna is teaming up with Time Warner Inc. reportedly in one of the most lucrative deals ever negotiated by a pop star — a seven-year contract worth perhaps $60 million to the Material Girl. The communications giant confirmed yesterday that it had signed a contract with the 33-year-old pop icon to form Mavick, a multimedia entertainment company to be run by the singer-acress and her manager, Fredv DeMann. Time Warner did not disclose the terms of the long-rumored deal, but The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times have reported it would advance Madonna $4 million to $60 million for the fledgling enterprise. That is unprecedented for a female pop entertainer and comparable to a $50 million-plus agreement Michael Jackson was reported to have negotiated last year with Sony Corp. The contract covers seven years with an option to extend to 11 years. According to the newspaper reports, the deal includes a renegotiated recording contract giving Madonna a $5 million advance for each of her next seven albums and a 20 percent royalty rate. Madonna said that her new companywouldbe an artisticthink tank "It started as a desire to have more control," she said. "There's a group of writers, photographers, directors and editors that I've met along the way in my career who I want to take with me wherever I go." Nearly a hundred performers, including Elton John, David Bowie, George Michael and other top pop stars from around the world, gathered for a tribute to Mercury. Queen guitarist Brian May took the stage with fellow Queen members Taylor and John Deacon, and saxist Steve Garnett him the biggest sendoff in history!
