University Daily Kansan / Monday, April 20, 1992 13 Lakers make playoffs with OT win The Associated Press INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Without Magic Johnson, James Worthy and Sam Perkins, the Los Angeles Lakers made the playoffs for the 16th straight year last night. They clinched the final berth in the waning seconds of overtime in the final regular-season game, a 109-108 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Sedale Threatt hit a 12 foot jumper with 4.5 seconds left in the extra period to give the Lakers the lead, then the Clippers' Doc Rivers missed an offbalance shot for the Clippers at the buzzer. Threatt scored 24 points for the Lakers and Byron Scott had 27. Danny Manning led the Clippers with 34 points. The Lakers' Elden Campbell sent the game into overtime when he made one of two free throws with 4.6 seconds left in regulation, tying it 100-100. The victory gave the Lakers a 43-39 record as they edged Houston for the last playoff berth. The Rockets left the door open earlier yesterday when they lost 109-76 to Phoenix, the third straight defeat for Houston (42-40), which had the tiebreaker advantage if the Rockets and Lakers had finished with the same record. The Lakers open the playoffs Thursday against the Trail Blazers at Portland. The Clippers, who last week clinched their first playoff berth since 1976, when they played at Buffalo and were called the Braves, begin the playoffs Friday at Utah against the Jazz. Manning gave the Clippers a 108-107 lead with his tip-in with 10.2 seconds left in overtime. Threaten then took the ball on the left side, came wide open when Rivers slipped and got off the winning shot. The overtime and most of the final quarter was nip-and-tuck. The Lakers seemed on their way out of the playoffs when the Clippers led 82-75 three minutes into the final quarter. But with Threatt, Scott and Terry Teagle leading the way, the Lakers ran off a 10-2 streak over the next three minutes to go ahead 85-84. The rest of the way was nip-and-tuck, with Manning giving the Clippers a 100-99 edge on a layup with 33 seconds remaining. Then the Clippers' Charles Smith fouled Campbell under the Lakers' basket, fouling out of the game in the process, and Campbell made his second free throw after missing the first. Rivers then missed a long jumper and Harper rebounded for the Clippers, but Campbell blocked his shot as the clock ran out on regulation. Teagle added 20 points on the bench for the Lakers, and A.C. Green had 12 rebounds and 16 points. Ron Harper had 22 points and Ken Norman 13 rebounds for the Clippers.
