14 University Daily Kansan / Friday. April 10. 1992 KU student pleads not guilty to thefts Kansanstaffreport A KU student who was charged in January with 12 counts of felony theft was arraigned yesterday on charges of seven counts of felony theft and five counts of misdemeanor theft. Nicole Emrick, Trumansburg, N.Y., sophomore, pleased not guilty to the seven felony counts of theft and to the five misdemeanor counts of theft in connection with the Nov. 30 burglary of the Central Missouri State University locker room at Allen Field House. Jerry Harper, Emrick's attorney, requested a trial by jury. The trial date will be May 8. Emrick was charged with seven counts of felony theft instead of 12, because in her preliminary hearing March 26, five of the 12 thefts were determined to be of items valued at less than $500, the dollar amount required to constitute a felony. About $14,300 worth of items were taken in the burglary, according to KU police reports. Harper and Christine Kenney, assistant district attorney, expressed concern that final exams would conflict with Emrick's trial, because many of the witnesses in the case are KU students and CMSU basketball players. However, the attorneys will try to reach a plea bargain agreement before the case goes to a jury trial. Social workers to explore gender issues at seminar The hot topic of gender issues will be explored today at the annual Social Work Day at the Kansas Union. Kansanstaffreport Sylvia Lowder, president of the Social Work Alumni Society, said about 500 people had registered for the event. Last year, 387 people attended, when the topic was empowerment for personal strength. The day is sponsored by the Social Work Alumni Society and KU's School of Social Welfare. Workshops called "Sexual Abuse and Cross Gender Treatment." "Sexual Harassment: Clinical Implications" and "Gender Issues in Legislative and Political Action" are scheduled throughout the day. Money earned from the event will go to social welfare scholarships. Most of today's speakers are KU alumni. The keynote speaker is Joan Laid, a professor at the Smith College School for Social Work, who will speak at 3:30 p.m. at Woodruff Auditorium. The cost for attending the workshop is $16.50 for social welfare students, $35 for social workers and $30 for social workers who are KU alumni and have contributed money to the school.
