University Daily Kansan / Friday, April 10, 1992 11 Quayle defends use of jets for golf trips The Associated Press WASHINGTON — The war of words regarding White House and congressional perks escalated yesterday as Vice President Dan Quayle sought to defend his use of military jets for golf trips and charged his Democratic critics with trying to divert attention from their own scandals. House Democrats, meanwhile, asserted that the White House was circumventing personnel guidelines by hiring workers for phony job descriptions at government departments, then detailing them to political duty at the White House. A study by the General Accounting Office reported that Quayle and White House Chief of Staff Samuel Skinner traveled together on military jets to play golf and participate in fund-raising events in 1990, when Skinner was secretary of transportation. Quayle told reporters that he had complied with all rules and regulations involving government travel. Bush defended Quayle, saying, "He's following the rules." The vice president, like Bush, has full use of military aircraft for personal use without reimbursement. Quayle attempted to turn the criticism back on the Democrats. "This does give me a golden opportunity to talk about the real problem, and that is the Democratic Congress, their scandal. It's on their doorstep. It's the House banking system, it's the check kiting, and this is simply a diversionary tactic," Quayle said. Tsongas makes choice; he will not rejoin race The Associated Press BOSTON — Paul Tsongas said yesterday that he would not reenter the Democratic presidential race despite his strong showing in the New York primary, a decision that boosts front-runner Bill Clinton's chances for swiftly rallying the party around his candidacy. "I will not re-enter the race." Tsongas said at a news conference in Boston, saying that to do so would be to play the role of spoiler. "I reject that role." The former Massachusetts senator said that his name would remain on future primary ballots and that he would keep his delegates to the party convention in July. Tsongas also declined to endorse Clinton. But he called on his supporters to cease campaign efforts on his behalf, and Clinton, as front-runner, was the primary beneficiary of his decision. Tsongas said he had spoken with Clinton by telephone Wednesday night. "He congratulated me, "Tsongsa said. "I congratulated him. He said that Clinton had not asked for support and that he had not offered it. Tsongas' decision was certain to cheer the Clinton camp, which is busy trying to create a bandwagon for the Arkansas governor after his four-state primary sweep this week in New York, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Kansas.
