Public hears plan for bungee-jumping site

The president of a Lawrence company that has proposed opening a bungee-jumping site near Clinton Lake lake last night to landowners who fear the site will be an eyesore and bring more development to the area.
Tim Hoppin, president of King of Swing Lt. Ltd., addressed about 20 people at the South Park Community Center, 11th and Vermont streets.
Hoppin said he had made arrangements with a landowner to rent a piece of land on Route 1 off Clinton Parkway for the jump site. For a fee, people could buy them as part of wearing harnesses attached to military shock cords, or bungee cords.
The site would be open on weekends in warm months.
However, several area residents have objected to the intended location, saying that the crane would disrupt the natural environment.
Don Hazlett, who lives less than half a mile from the site, said: "When you superimpose a crane on the land along with the noise that will accompany the jumping, you're going to erase the serenity of the land. I don't have anything against bungee jumping. I just have something against bungee jumping in my backyard."
Hoppin was accompanied by a training and technical engineer for Vertical Addictions Inc., a Los Angeles-based bungee-jumping company. The Clinton site would be a Vertical Additions franchise.
Hoppin said the crane would not have a large effect on the environment because it would only be elevated from about 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during seasonal months.
Hoppin said the company would stay at the Clinton site for only two or three years, because the demand for bungee jumping would last about that long.
That did not matter to Mike Bronoski, who lives 800 feet from the intended
site. He said that he was worried that if the bungee site were allowed to open near the west end of Clinton Parkway, it would allow for other commercial sites to open in the area.
"I just want the public to be aware of what they're opening the door to," Bronskii said. "There has been a very conscious effort to maintain the aesthetics in that area, but if that's what the public wants, then I'll shut up."
The proposal will go before the Douglas County Planning Commission on April 22. It will then send the plan, with its recommendations, to the County Commission, which will hear the plan May 13. The County Commission will have the final word on the site.
Hoppin and Vertical Addictions Inc. currently are operating a jump site every weekend at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner until the Lawrence site proposal either passes of fails. Hoppin said the charge was $59 for one jump or $89 for two jumps, including a video tape of the jumps.
Debate team ends season

Although the Kansas debate team did not place in the top 16 at this year's national tournament, its coach said it reached its goal of gaining experience.
In competition, two two-person teams from Kansas beat Michigan, Washburn University, North Texas State and four other schools and lost a split decision to eventual champion Georgetown University.
The 78-team tournament at Miami University of Ohio in Oxford, Ohio, began Saturday and ended yesterday morning. It was the last tournament of the season.
Scott Harris, debate coach, said the experience would help the team nextyear in the tournament.
"Especially since we hold our own against the number one team."Harris said.
