Star wins award for story on USDA The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The newsroom erupted when it was announced in New York this afternoon that reporters Jeff Taylor and Mike McGraw of The Kansas City Star had won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. When the story moved on The Associated Press wire, there was a moment of dazed silence, and everything erupted, Taylor said. The rest of the newsroom surged to the desks where Taylor and McGraw had worked on the critical examination of the U.S. Department of agriculture that won them the award, Taylor said. McGraw said he and Taylor never expected to win because there was such strong competition. He said he still was numb. "As far as I can tell, it feels wonderful," he said. Editor Joe McGuff, who announced recently that he will retire May 1, said, "It's a great way to go out." The Pulitzer winners were announced by Columbia University, which administers the Pulitzer competition. Each award carries a cash prize of $3,000, except the public service award, which comes with a gold medal. It was the 76th year the prizes were given.
