University Daily Kansan / Wednesdav. April 8. 1992 INTERNATIONAL 7 United States recognizes republics' independence The Associated Press SARAJEVO, Yugoslavia Airstrikes by Yugoslav jets killed at least six people in Bosnia-Hercegovina yesterday as the United States recognized the republic's independence along with that of Croatia and Slovenia. The U.S. recognition of Bosnia-Hercevina came one day after its independence was recognized by the 12-member European Community. Washington also recognized Croatia and Slovenia, which the EC recognized Jan. 15. Welcoming Washington's recognition, the Bosnian government said in a statement that such recognition represented the victory of the democratic will of the people of Bosnia-Hercegovina. Ethnic Serbians in northern Bosnia proclaimed their own state and said they intended to remain allied with Serbia, the largest republic in what was the Yugoslav federation. Two Serbian members of Bosnia's seven-person presidency announced their resignations. The Serb-dominated federal army, thought to have about 150,000 men stationed in Bosnia, generally is viewed as the decisive factor in the Bosnian In Belgrade, Gen. Zivota Panic, acting head of the federal general staff, said the army would not withdraw from the republic and warned: "We are closer to war than peace." equation. Ethnic Serbian leaders have called on it to support a separate Serbian state. Bosnia's deputy premier, Muhamed Cengic, said the commander of the Sarajevo corps of the Serbian-dominated federal military had promised to respect Bosnia's independence, and he trusted him. But federal air force jets rocketed an ammunition depot and a factory in Siroki Brijeg, near the Adriatic coast, and an armaments factory in nearby Citluk. Six people were killed, Bosnian radio said. Fourteen other people were reported killed elsewhere in the republic yesterday, many of them near Kupres, 50 miles west of the capital, Sarajevo. Boonia's President Alijza Iizetbegovia said the air force also hit the village of Medjugorje, site of a well-known Roman Catholic shrine. Croatian radio reported street battles in a suburb of Mostar, where a large federal army and air force contingent are based. Scientists: Ozone layer may tear if chemicals are not banned soon The Associated Press The ozone shield has thinned markedly over the Northern Hemisphere in recent months, and it may tear unless governments quickly ban harmful chemicals, European scientists say. "We're running out of time," said Neil Harris, of the Cambridge-based European Ozone Secretariat, announcing yesterday's release of a 17-nation EC-financed study of the Earth's screen against dangerous ultraviolet rays. The European Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Experiment concluded that the northern ozone layer decreased by 10 to 20 percent in December and January. Some levels are usually at their low levels during winter months, but the study said many monitoring stations reported particular drops this winter. scientist Joe Farman, who in 1985 announced the discovery of a hole in the ozone over the Antarctic. Farman urged governments to speed up the phasing out ozone-eating, chlorofluorocarbons, chemicals which commonly are used as refrigerants and fire-retarding halons.
