Student Senate coalitions debate issues By Jay Williams Kansan staff writer The Student Senate campaign seemed to halt its negative turn last night when the leaders of each coalition calmly debated at the Kansas Union Ballroom. The highly structured format of the debate between Vision and Unless coalition members seemed to keep the discussion civil — a switch from the amplified verbal attacks of earlier in the week. Jean Winter, Unless presidential candidate, said she and Brad Garlinghouse, Vision presidential candidate, met yesterday and decided to tone down the coalitions' rhetoric. "We didn't want it to deteriorate into a negative campaign," Winter said after the debate last night. "We wanted it to issues and we were successful." Garlinghouse said a radio debate earlier in the day was the beginning of the relaxed tensions. "The show was laid back today, and it carried over to tonight," Garlinghouse said. The candidates fielded questions from the opposing coalitions and the audience of about 125 people, most of whom were coalition members. Garlinghouse and Lance Wright again hammered on the lack of Senate experience in the Unless coalition. "We have the necessary experience," Wright said. "If it doesn't matter, why does it keep coming up?" "Lance and Brad would have you believe we are incompetent," she said. "We do have experience, just not within Senate." Winter said Vision painted an unfair picture of Unless' experience. She said members of her coalition had experience in other campus organizations, such as OAKS — Non-Traditional Students Organization. Garlinghouse said that when he was a member of Senate's Transportation Board, the board changed the contract for Secure Cab, reducing the cost for each rider by 35 percent and increasing ridership by 60 percent. Winter said she had various types of experience, including writing legislation for the Kansas Legislature earlier this semester. The bill she authored would allow a defendant's past sexual history to be used in court. One of the few audience members not connected to a coalition said the candidates avoided the questions. "I think it is disappointing to see people learning how to carry on-answer answers at such a young age," said Laura Mullins, Prairie Village sophomore. The candidates discussed other issues from the campaign platforms: Garlinghouse said Senate needed to continue to work with Associated Students of Kansas, the statewide student lobbying group, and enlist alumni help to lobby important legislative members. Winter said she did not know how the alumni could be more effective helping KU. ASK and Senate need to communicate better, she said. The Unless proposal of the creation of a department of multicultural affairs brought questions from Vision members. Chris Stong, unless vice-presidential candidate, said the office would be an umbrella organization for other minority offices at the University and reduce bureaucracy by placing all offices under one heading. Lance Wright, Vision vice-presidential candidate, said his coalition favored placing the Office of Minority Affairs in the University administration. The coalitions have different plans to involve more non-traditional students. Wright said that Senate and the University should not segregate nontraditional students by classifying them only as nontraditional. Stong said that Unless favored the reappointment of Senate seats to more accurately reflect KU's nontraditional population, about 30 percent of KU's total population.
