Stadium saw a classic mixturé 'duel.
It took a one-out home run in the top of the 15th inning by Wichita State sophomore second baseman Joey Jackson, against Kansas reliever Tom Stewart, to give the No.1-ranked Shockers a 3-2 victory against the Jayhawks on a chill night.
After nine scoreleaves innings, the teams each scored runs in the 10th and 13th innings before Jackson's homer in the 15th. The long, drawn-out affair overshadowed a superb pitching performance by junior Jimmy Walker. Walker went nine and a third innings, giving up four hits and one run. He walked only one hitter and struck out eight, the most by a Kansas pitcher this season. Through eight innings, Walker faced 24 hitters, the minimum he could have faced.
"I thought that was the finest pitching effort I have seen on our ballclub in five years," Kansas coach Dave Bingham said. "He had outstanding command of his pitches. It was a shame we couldn't get him a run to win that game."
Walker said he was getting four different pitches over for strikes, keeping a Wichita State team that averaged 20.5 runs a game, scoreless for nine innings.

"I had real good control of my pitches," the Nickerson pitcher said. "Anytime you can do that you have a chance to be successful."
Wichita States scored in the top of the 10th inning on an RBI double by junior Scot McCloughan. The Jayhawks answered with a run of their own off a single by designated hitter Kent Mahon. Junior catcher Jeff Niemier started the inning with a single. Two sacrifices and a walk later, the stage was set for freshman Josh Igou. Igou hit a sharp ground ball at second baseman Jackson to end the inning.

Bingham said that when the pressure was on the Jayhawks, they could not comen through.
"We had some base hits but couldn't punch them in," he said. "That's really been the story of our season. We can get some things done."
The Jayhawks left a season high 16 runners on base.

Bingham said the television audience did not seem to bother either club. The game was broadest in Lawrence by KSMO, of Kansas City, MO, and KAKE-TV of Wichita. He said the capacity filled stadium made for a great environment for college baseball.
The Jayhawks will have to regroup quickly. They have a four-game Big Eight Conference series in Stillwater, Okla., against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Cowboys won the conference last year and swept last year's four-game series.

Pitcher sets strike-out mark
Jimmy Walker, Nickerson junior was Bingham'sman.
With the Kansas baseball team preparing to play a televised game for the first time ever at Hoglund-Maupin Stadium against Wichita State, Coach Dave Bingham knew that he would need a pitcher equal to the task.
But with Walker's mediocre statistics, which include a 3-record and a 4.65 ERA. Bingham needed some to go to go with the right-handed hurler.
For one reason or another, Bingham's rationale worked.
"Walker is the kind of guy that if you put him on TV he might rise to the occasion," Bingham said. "He's kind of a hot dog."
Walker threw three and one-third innings and allowed only one run to the No. 1 team in the nation. He also struck out eight batters, the most by a Kansas pitcher this year, while walkin three and allowing only four hits.
Walker said that he had tried not to
let the media affect him.
"I just tried to go out and have a real good performance." he said.

Walker said that last night's performance was his best ever as a Jayhawk.
Shutting down the Shockers, 261, who average 11.5 runs a game and have a .344 team batting average, to only one run through nine-plus innings would tend to rank high on any pitcher's list of accomplishments.
But Walker said that a Kansas victory would have been better than any personal triumph. The Shockers beat Kansas 3-2 last night in the 10th inning when second baseman Joey Jackson ripped the game-winning home run over the left-center field fence.
Walker said that after taking the Shockers the distance, the Jayhawks, who have lostnose of their last 11 games, were showing signs of returning to the winning ways that him to a 14-4 record early in the season.
"I think we're back," he said. "We've been struggling lately but we're ready to play some ball."

Record is 23-5 after sweep of doubleheader

The cold weather didn't slow the Kansas softball team yesterday as it swept a doubleheader from Wichita State. The Jayhawks improved to 23-5 overall after shutting out the Shockers 1-0 and 5-0. The Shockers dropped to 9-18 overall.
"The weather wasn't a factor." coach Kalum Haack said. "It shouldn't be a factor because it's just as cold for the other team as it is for us."
The Jayhawks won the first game on the strength of their pitching and solid defense.
Kansas scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning. Senior shortstop Christy Arterburn reached base after being hit by a pitch. After advancing to second, she stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Camille Spitaleri.
Junior pitcher Stepan Williams hit one batter and gave up a double before getting back on track.
But the Hawks ran into problems in the fourth inning.
Williams struck out 12 batters in the first game, but hit four. She said that although she was having mechanical problems with her delivery, she was never worried about losing the game.
"I know the team can hit and I know that we have good defense," she said. "I usually don't worry about it. I just worry about where to put the pitch."
Haack said he was not worried about falling behind, either.
The Jayhawks scored three runs in the fourth inning, putting the second game out of reach for the Shockers.
"I am confident in Stephan's ability," he said. "I knew they weren't going to get back-to-back hits. She was throwing the ball around the plate to well."

Haack said he was pleased with the intensity the team displayed in the second game.
Oklahoma State is ranked sixth in the latest collegiate softball poll, and Haack said he expects a duel between pitchers when the two teams meet.
The Jayhawks will open their Big Eight Conference season this weekend in Stillwater, Okla., with double-headers against Oklahoma State and Nebraska.
Junior pitcher Jill Bailey improved her record to 6-2 with her third shutout of the year. She allowed four hits and threw two strikeouts in the second game.
"That's all I want from them," he said. "If we come out and play that way, every game we'll get our runs."
"Jill pitched a really good ball game," Haack said. "She is making great progress this season."
"There will probably be some one run games," he said. "Whoever gets the breaks is going to win."

But he will not be there with a Final Four Jayhawk team, as he and many Kansas fans had hoped. Instead, he will be the coach for the West Squadrille in the final week of the season. Coaches college all-star game 7: 30 Friday night at the Target Center.
The trip will be made just two weeks after the Jayhawks were stunned by the University of Texas-Eli Pass in the second round of the NCAA tournament, a tournament that Williams said had too much importance attached to it.
"It it's sickening in a way." Williams said. "The tournament has gotten so big. It's asalf the first 18 weeks of the season don't make any difference. I love the tournament, but it has got so much out of proportion."
Williams said the tournament should not be the only measure of success.

"This group of kids were sensational for 18 weeks," Williams said of the Jayhawks, who finished 27-5. "I don't want our program to be judged just on the last three weeks of the season."
Junior point guard Adonis Jordan said he felt down last weekend when the Midwest Regional tournament was being played in Kansas City, but said that he was over the loss to UTEP.

Sophomore forward Patrick Richey said that the Jayhawks' goals this season were to win the Big Eight Conference, and then win the NCAA title, and then win the NCAA title.
But Richey also said that even though the NCAA tournament might be considered too important, going to the Final Four would be a better title should be a main goal every year.
"In a way, that's what you play for all year," he said. "You can win the conference and that's great, but you're not known as the No. 1 team in the country."

Kansas senior forward Alonzo Jamison will be a member of the West Squad that Williams will coach in Friday night's game, which will be broadcast on ESPN, Channel 18 in Lawrence. Players also will compete in three-point and slam dunk competitions.
