Costs hamper student travel

Spring break beckons college students to enjoy one week of sunshine, beer guzzling and relief from homework.
Sonya Clark, Dallas senior, said she needed to stay in Lawrence to make money.
But with a struggling national economy and an increase in travel costs, many fans of the spring ritual might have to watch their spending before they trip into debt.
Students who will not be hitting the beaches or ski slopes will be exchanging their sun tan lotion for their work clothes.
"Some are doing the trips on their own and not going through a travel agency," Khoury said.

Kelly Belkowski, public relations secretary for the chamber of commerce office in Daytona, Fla., said that she expected to see just as many college students as in past years but that those students likely would be tight with their pocketbooks.

"A lot more people this year are staying here," Clark said. "They are going to stay here and look for interviews and jobs. Some of the younger people I know, freshmen and sophomores, they are taking trips. But they do not have the same concerns as others."
Although tourism officials at many popular spring break hangouts said they anticipated large crowds, local travel agents said they were seeing changes in travel plans.
Corrie Thompson, travel agent for Sunflower Travel Service, 704 Massachusetts St., said tough economic times and higher travel expenses caused college students to reconsider their spring breaks.

For some students, spring break can mean disappointment and lost money.

Every year, several KU students are the victims of travel scams, in which misleading advertisements and disreputable tour operators lure students with promises that are not fulfilled, said Jo Hardesty, director of KU Legal Services for Students.

"Travel packages advertised in fliers around campus or in the newspaper often sound great, but when the students get there it is nothing like they had been promised." Hardesty said. "The hotel is not anything like they were led to believe. They might have to share a room with strangers, or there might not even be any reservations for them at all."
Most of the cases involved national tour operators who specialize in student tours. Hardesty said.
"Wehavenever hadany trouble with local travelagencies,"she said. "Even if a tour company has a designated student representative on campus, that student may not know what is going on."
"I just tell students to be aware and be careful before they give their money to some place they don't know," she said.
Hardesty said she advised students to see if a travel agent was a member of the American Society of Travel Agents and of States Tour Operators Association.
"If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is," Khoury said. "Always get everything in writing."
Alycia Rico, Alicante, Spain, graduate student, said that last year she intended to go to Cancun, Mexico, with three of her friends, but that things did not go the way they planned.

The representative told the students that they would receive their travel documents several weeks before the intended travel date, but Rico and her friends did not hear from the company.
"When we finally got a hold of her again, she told us she knew nothing." Rico said. "She gave us an 800 number for the company, which was in Canada. When we finally got a hold of them three days before we were supposed to go, they said the trip had been canceled."
Rico said she contacted Legal Services for Students and was advised to cancel payment on the checks and credit cards used to pay for the trip.
"I would never buy a trip from an ad in the paper again," she said.

"If they don't name a specific hotel, then you may be on your own once you get there," she said. "If they just say "Come to the beach, it may be 40 miles away."
Khoury said students should contact the Better Business Bureau in Kansas and the state the travel agent operated from to see if there had been any complaints about the company.
"Any reputable company will be a member of either travel agent association," she said. "If they are, they will always advertise that prominently on their package material."
