Groups urge safe break
Students pledge to be cautious on vacations

"Don't let yourself go downhill" is the message several campus groups hope to convey to KU students before they depart on spring break.
Several campus organizations distributed sunscreen packets, brochures, buttons and nonalcoholic beverages yesterday in front of Wescoe Hall, starting the second annual KU Safe Break Week.
About 50 KU students signed pledge cards stating they would take precautions to have safe breaks. Everyone who signs a pledge card has a chance to win a 1992 Chrysler from Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning Health of University Students, or BACCHUS, a national organization promoting responsible alcohol use.
Mary Ann Saul, clinical social worker for counseling and psychological services, or CAPS, said CAPS distributed brochures to promote a balance between fun and responsibility.
"To promote and maintain that fun can be healthy - that's why we're here," Saul said.
But students need to worry about more than sunburns and

The Watkins physical therapy department offered brochures and advice about how to prevent injuries from skiing, bicycling or volleyball.
Mike Chapman, chief physical therapist at Watkins, said injuries such as sprains and torn ligaments were common during spring break.
"We're reminding people to be safe when they're out there," Chapman said. "They have a lot more fun when they don't get hurt."
mssweek'sevents are sponsored by Watkins, Promoting Alcohol Responsibility Through You, or PARTY, Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol, or GAMMA, Forming Awareness of Cancer Through Students, or FACTS, University Residence Halls and the Athletic Department.
The displays will be out from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday in front of Wescoe.

KU assures students degree will be offered

Absorbing computer science into the math and computer engineering departments is an option the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is trying to avoid, the dean of the college said yesterday to about 60 computer science undergraduate students.
James Muyksens said that he wanted the computer science department to remain in the college. However, he told the students that external factors could determine the department's fate.
Muyksken said that a Board of Regents program review might call for the elimination of the department. All programs at Regents universities have to file their materials for review by April15.
The leaking of a confidential report which suggested a dissolution did not help the department's chances for survival, he said.
"The Regents will be looking at this department with greater scrutiny than any other department at the University." he said.
Although Muyksen said that dismantling would be a worst-case scenario, he assured the students that a computer science degree would be available at the University of Kansas.
He compared the situation to the environmental studies program, which is not an official department but offers a degree.
The undergraduate degree in computer science will remain. Many universities that you attend are absolutely cer-
tain that your degree will be accredited by the University of Washington if it does.
If the department is redistributed, students relocated to
the school of Engineering would have to pay the engineering fees, he said.
One option for saving the department is to limit future enrollment in beginning computer science courses. This would be done by setting grade requirements for students who wished to major in computer science, he said.
Muyksens also addressed the issue of reported conflicts among department faculty. He said that he did not plan to attempt to remove any tenured faculty.
Although Muyksens did not distribute copies of the confidential report to the students, several copies lay outside the auditorium at Snow Hall. He said that computer science nurses who wished to see the report could read it at his office.
The leaked report and the circulating rumors have hurt the department's national reputation, he said.
"That is precisely what I did not want to happen," Muyskens said.

Sally Frost-Mason, associate dean of liberal arts and sciences, said that students could help the department by not getting involved in the faculty conflict.

Both Muyskens and Frost-Mason said that they would make themselves available for student input about the situation.
David Tweito, Hutchinson junior, said that he was close to completing a degree in computer science but that he still was not sure of the department's future.
"Now I will get done because I do not want to be transferred to the School of Engineering and pay several hundred dollars in engineering fees," he said.

Students compliant, athletic official says

When last night's game ended and the Kansas men's basketball team defeated Oklahoma State 77-64, the Jahawk faithfully appeared pleased.
But before the game, rumblings of displeasure had floated through the student section at Allen Field House.
Several students' complaints that they were not able to sit in empty seats at the field house prompted the Athletic Department to decide during its staff meeting Friday that it would stop students from saving seats before games, said Floyd Temple.

said students had reacted well to the Athletic Department's first attempt to prevent students from saving seats.
"Our students are simply fantastic," he said. "When you ask them to do something and they know it fair, they are very smart. Can we have no problems at all?"
Temple said he had instructed ushers to prevent students from saving large blocks of seats.
"I told them not to worry if they saw "I told them not to worry if they saw "I few empty seats," he said. "The students filled into the seats very well, and we have not had any problems."
Temple said that he knew some students were unhappy but that no figs or arguments had been reported.
Scott Moore, Council Grove freshman, said the policy was silly.
"We already sit in the worst part of the stadium," he said, "I just don't like the way someone I've never met makes decisions that affect all of us. Every time I get up, I wonder whether we will still be open when I return."
Trey Ham, Olathe sophomore, said ushers had told them not to spread newspapers across seats.
Many students in the past had saved seats by spreading newspapers across them.
"But they never said anything about my body," he said. "So I've expanded myself. I wouldn't call that saving seats."

Fla, freshman, said one of his friends had been told to leave his newspaper, which he had not read, at the door.
"But he brought that newspaper to read during the long wait for the game," he said.
However, Juarez said he was glad the Athletic Department had ended the trade.
"Now when my friends come up to me and ask me if I have room for them, I can tell them truthfully that we are not allowed to save seats," he said.
Brian Forsythe, Overland Park senior, said saving seats had been a serious problem at previous games.
"But there haven't been any problems this game," he said. "There's no reason for anybody to save three or four rows."
Libertarian ideology attracts college converts

Both students have recently joined the KU Libertarians, an organization that started in October and is steadily increasing its membership.

He said the Libertarian party based its beliefs on reduced government at all levels and on both personal and economic freedom, two freedoms the
Democrats and the Republicans try to infringe upon.
Kenneth Collier, assistant professor of government, said the number of members fluctuated according to the political climate.
Collier said the membership probably declined when Ronald Reagan ran for office because some Libertarians found Reagan's policies attractive.
Burdett Loomis, professor of political science, said people might find the Libertarian party attractive because

Frank Kaul, president of the KUL Libertarians, said membership on campus and nationwide was increasing. The presence of the present state of political affairs.
"I think people are sick of the present system," said Kaul, who started a chapter on campus in 1985, which disbanded because of a lack of interest. "A lot of people know they don't like what's going on, but they're not aware what other alternatives exist."
