Experimental medicine used to fight hepatitis kills fifth trial volunteer A fifth volunteer died yesterday from an experimental drug towed as a miracle cure for hepatitis B, beyond medical rescue even as scientists unravel the mystery of what went gravely wrong in a clinical trial. The drug Fialuridine, or FLAU, had shown great promise for fighting the hepatitis B virus, which can cause deadly cirrhosis and liver cancer. When dogs passed toxicity tests unharmed, the Food and Drug Administration approved FIAU for human trials. "Something terrible happened, and we missed it," Dr. Jay Hoifnagel said in an emotional interview describing the horror of realizing the drug was killing people months after they stopped taking it. 935 Massachusetts 749-5194 Hours: Mon-Sat: 9:30-5:30 Thurs 'til 8:00 Sun 12:5:00 Scientists would discover too late that in humans FIAU stealthily attacks the very building blocks of cells in livers, kidneys and nerves. NASA, which last heard from the craft Aug 21, continued to send messages to salvage the $800 million mission. Had the restart command been given, Mars Observer would have been expected to communicate with the laboratory after a 65-hour waiting period. PASADENA, Calif.
