Vacation Credit Remote Plan a VCR Summer With Kansas State University's Distance Learning Program your summer can include vacation and the opportunity to earn college credit, too. The Distance Learning Program offers video and audiotaped courses that you can complete at home. Students listen to or watch taped lectures, complete reading and writing assignments, take tests, and perform other activities outlined in the course syllabus. "A couple of people have pulled guns this year," said one student, who asked that his name not be used. The student, interviewed in his classroom, said he believed that one of every 10 males at the high school had a gun on him or in his locker at one time or another. "I had an incident ... where a little gang banger, I think he was 17, pulled a gun on a tenant." Shelly White, an assistant Douglas County district attorney, said she remembered an incident last summer when several juveniles beat up an elderly man in an alley and left him for dead. Some gang members move to Lawrence with their families. Others join gangs to be cool. Lt. Mark Brothers of the Lawrence Police Department said gang members were attracted to Lawrence because of the college population. In attempts to react to the problem, officials are scrambling to build new youth detention centers, including one in Lawrence. But these centers are costly and prone to filling up. Some detention centers are already overcrowded, and some officials want more emphasis put on keeping kids out of the system.
