The men's and women's track team will compete in the Big Eight Championships on May 17-18. Track teams prepare for conference meet By Blake Spurney Kansan sportswriter The Kansas men's and women's track teams will head into the Big Eight Championships, May 17-18 in Boulder, Colo., with many athletes peaking at the end of the season. Coach Gary Schwartz said the men's team turned a corner last weekend and showed improvement at the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis. "We had a good meet, considering the weather was so miserable," Schwartz said. "What we're looking for is competitiveness — going for places not times." He was pleased with the Jayhawks who finished second through fifth in the 1,500 meter run. Steve Holman, who ran the event for the 1992 United States Olympic team, won in 3:42.52 Holman was followed by Kansas juniors Michael Cox, 3:48.46, David Johnston, 3:52.45, Jon Handy 3:52.73, and sophomore Chris Ronan, 3:55.15. Junior long jumper Haran Hazim battled with the rain, wind and cold to place second with a jump of 24-11. Junior pole vaulters John Bazzoni, who missed the indoor season because of injuries, will give the Jayhawks a good opportunity at some points. His 17-1 vault in Minnesota tied the meet record and gave him the victory in the unfavorable conditions. After the men's team scored only 19 points at the Big Eight Indoor Championships and finished seventh, Schwartz said he was looking for better representation at the conference outdoor meet. Schwartz also is optimistic that the women's team will improve on its fourth-place finish at conference indoors. Sophomore Dawn Steele won the 400 hurdles at Minnesota in what was her third solid performance in a row. Schwartz said that one big breakthrough was junior Keely Harding's performance in the high jump at Minnesota. She jumped 5-10, finishing second, and it was good enough to provisionally qualify her for the NCAA championships. COUPONS This coupon entitles the bearer to one 60¢ game during open bowling.
